Xining Wildlife Park – Rare Highland Species

Xining Wildlife Park Rare Highland Species

Xining Wildlife Park (西宁野生动物园), also known as the Qinghai Wildlife Rescue and Breeding Center or the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau Wildlife Park, is home to over 180 species and more than 3,000 animals. The park features several key areas, including the predator free-range zone, herbivore free-range zone, aviary, waterfowl lake, primate pavilion, small feline pavilion, large rare animal pavilion, leopard house, parrot house, and zebra house.

The park is renowned for housing the largest captive breeding populations of snow leopards, black-necked cranes, and Przewalski’s gazelles. In addition to these highland species, the park is also home to other plateau animals like the desert cat, bearded vulture, goitered gazelle, white-lipped deer, wild yak, and wild camel, as well as exotic animals like hippos, giraffes, crocodiles, sea lions, Siberian tigers, African lions, and zebras.

Set within an urban area, Xining Wildlife Park’s landscape includes rolling hills, ravines, and flatlands, providing large, natural enclosures for the animals. The park refrains from animal performances to respect the natural behaviors of the wildlife. Due to its vast size and challenging terrain at a high altitude, the park offers sightseeing vehicles, such as a small train and electric shuttles, as well as family-friendly activities like a 5D cinema and a kids’ playground.

Visitors can take an electric cart to the free-range area, then switch to a bus to safely observe tigers, wolves, bears, and birds of prey through glass windows. The park’s walking paths offer close encounters with unique plateau herbivores such as Tibetan antelopes and wild donkeys. There are also viewing areas for big cats like lions, tigers, and brown bears, as well as various animals on the western slopes, including zebras, leopards, kangaroos, and ostriches.
