Yangshuo Park – Stunning Views of The County Town

Yangshuo Park

Yangshuo Park (阳朔公园), located in the western part of Yangshuo Town, covers an area of 340 acres. The park offers stunning views of the county town from its elevated spots. Established in 1915, it was initially named “Shouyang Park” due to its proximity to Shouyang Mountain (Bilian Peak). After its first expansion in 1934, the park was renamed “Yangshuo Park.”

The park features two main entrances: the large gate, adorned with the calligraphy of the renowned contemporary calligrapher Liu Haisu, and the smaller gate, situated southwest of the Bilian Cave, built in 1980 with the calligraphy of the famous painter Lu Yanshao.

Yangshuo Park is known for its lush groves of osmanthus trees, dense bamboo and timber, and vibrant floral displays that provide year-round fragrance. The park is traversed by the Shuangyue Creek, which meanders through the grounds. Surrounded by dramatic peaks, the park includes notable scenic spots such as Duxiu Peak, Xilang Mountain, Bilian Cave, and Laixian Cave.

Highlights of Yangshuo Park

Duxiu Peak

Yangshuo Park 3

Located to the east of the park, Duxiu Peak rises dramatically from the ground, resembling a column with walls that appear like relief sculptures, earning it the name “Jade Pillar Piercing the Sky.” Its shape is also compared to a bamboo root, thus it is sometimes called Bamboo Root Peak. The peak stands 100 meters high with a flat summit and steep walls covered in vines and trees. At the mountain’s mid-level is a pavilion known as “放鹤亭” (Pavilion for Releasing Cranes), named according to a local legend where an immortal, having arrived by crane, released the crane here.

Xilang Mountain

Yangshuo Park 1

Xilang Mountain, formerly known as Pingfeng Mountain due to its fan-like shape, is located in the southern part of the park. It rises about 100 meters high. On the northern side of the mountain’s midsection stands a prominent rock, approximately 10 meters tall, resembling a man standing with folded arms, called “Xilang” (Western Gentleman). This mountain is often compared with Donglang Mountain in the eastern part of the county, regarded as a symbolic brother peak. The mountain wall features the characters “西郎” (“Xilang”) and a poem titled “Xilang Mountain” by the Tang Dynasty poet Cao Ye from Yangshuo. Near the nearby Zhongling Mountain is a small peak called Xiao Gu Mountain, which faces Xilang Mountain, creating a scene known as “Xilang Bows to Gu.” Adjacent to Xilang is a two-story hexagonal pavilion known as “会仙亭” (Pavilion of Meeting Immortals), named for its association with local legends of immortals gathering here to admire the scenery. The northern side of the pavilion features a natural stone basin inscribed with the characters “天池” (Heavenly Pool), and to the east, a stone shaped like a tiger with the inscription “醉霞” (Drunken Sunset). On the peak is a pavilion named “卧云亭” (Cloud-Lying Pavilion) due to its appearance as if lying on the clouds.

Chunlei Garden

Yangshuo Park 2

Chunlei Garden is located at the northern foothills of Zhongling Mountain. The entrance features a classical-style building with the garden’s name, “春蕾苑,” inscribed on a plaque. The couplet above the entrance reads: “Spring descends upon the jade-like peaks, buds bloom on the beautiful branches of the garden,” calligraphed by the renowned artist Hou Dechang.

The garden is richly planted with orchids and bamboo, showcasing various bonsai. It includes artificial lakes, a small bridge crossing the lake, winding paths along the water, and ornamental rockeries and pavilions, creating a unique and naturalistic landscape.

The layout of Chunlei Garden centers around a large pond, with the main structure being a two-story hexagonal pavilion named “报春” (Spring Announcement Pavilion). The pavilion features open galleries on both sides and winding corridors that connect it to the surrounding garden.
