Zhongshan Ancient Town, Chongqing – Ticket Price, Opening Hours, Transportation, and Highlights

zhongshan ancient town chongqing

Zhongshan Ancient Town (中山古镇), commonly known as Sanhechang and also called Longdongchang, is nestled in the southern mountainous region of Jiangjin District, Chongqing. Its buildings are constructed along the water, showcasing a multitude of two-story stilt houses where the ground floor serves as storefronts, while people reside on the upper level. The entire town is covered with green-tiled roofs, red-painted wooden boards, and bamboo-reinforced walls, supported by round columns, making it a prime location to experience the cultural essence of Sichuan and Chongqing.

The town has a rich history as a bustling river port, serving as a trading hub for goods in the Sichuan-Guizhou mountainous area. According to inscriptions on the “Qingxi Longdong Title” stele from the Southern Song Dynasty in 1151 AD, the history of Longdongchang can be traced back 858 years. In the 33rd year of the Kangxi era during the Qing Dynasty (1694), administrative institutions were established, known as the “Sushui Twelve”. During the Guangxu era, the original Longdongchang, Laochang, and Masangyachang were merged into Sanhechang, which was later renamed Zhongshan Town after several administrative adjustments.

Zhongshan Ancient Town is home to Wanshou Temple, stone inscriptions like “Wu-Shu Equal Profit,” and the “Anti-Counterfeit” stele, representing the rich merchant culture of the area. The past prosperity of trade and commerce gave rise to guilds such as the “Yanbang,” “Mabang,” “Chuanbang,” “Mubang,” “Mibang,” “Qingshanbang,” “Qingguobang,” “Shuishoubang,” and “Weiyaobang.” This flourishing commercial environment also fostered the earliest precursor to WTO rules in the form of “Wu-Shu Equal Profit” and China’s early “Anti-Counterfeit Notice – Prohibition of Sale of Water Rice Stele,” alongside various commercial and guild traditions like the “Mubang Public Penalty” and environmental conservation agreements such as “Prohibition of Slaughtering” and “Prohibition of Fishing.” The town’s behavioral norms include the “Hangover Stone” and the “Zheng Family’s Filial Piety Stele” among others, reflecting the cultural richness of the region.

Ancient Temples

Shuangfeng Temple is one of the few well-preserved complex-style Zen Buddhist temples with a traditional courtyard structure.

Perhaps it’s because Zhongshan Ancient Town is about 100 kilometers away from the main city area that it feels quite desolate. But that’s good, as it preserves its inherent beauty—quiet and rustic.

The ancient stilt houses are neatly arranged along both sides of the river, with a clean and tidy bluestone path running down the middle of these historic buildings. The red lanterns hanging high above add to the festive atmosphere, further enhancing the charm of this ancient town. The town is not very large, making it perfect for a leisurely stroll. Along the way, you can find local specialties such as smoked tofu, stone-grilled rice cakes, smashed rice liquor, fermented tofu,… Read more »

From the architecture and the geographical location, you can see the former prosperity and vibrant atmosphere of Zhongshan Ancient Town. However, after renovations, it has turned into a food street. The commercial model is similar to other “ancient towns,” which leads to a sense of aesthetic fatigue.

Jiangjin Zhongshan Ancient Town is less crowded on weekdays, which is great if you enjoy authentic, uncommercialized ancient towns.
The town has a low level of commercialization and feels somewhat similar to Gongtan Ancient Town.

Most foreign tourists visiting Chongqing often go to the Ciqikou Ancient Town. Although Ciqikou is indeed a historical town with a rich heritage, it has become quite commercialized. Personally, I prefer quaint and tranquil little towns, which is why I have a very good impression of Zhongshan Ancient Town. Zhongshan Ancient Town is about an hour’s drive from Chongqing, and it can be visited along with Four Sides Mountain (四面山) and Jiangjin Shaolin Temple (江津少林寺).

The ancient town does not charge an entrance fee, so it’s free to enter. However, to reach the main entrance, you need to take a shuttle electric cart for about 1 kilometer, which costs 4 yuan per person. If it’s not too hot, taking a leisurely stroll there is also quite pleasant.

The ancient town has no notable attractions or distinctive features, just a market selling vegetables, fish, herbs, rice candy, tofu, and wine, along with vendors constantly trying to lure customers in to eat at their restaurants. It feels rather meaningless.

It has been 20 years since my last visit to the Zhongshan Ancient Town. Even 3 years after the fire in 2021, there are still traces of the reconstruction from the previous blaze. There are not many commercial activities or tourists around.

This place is known as “Little Zhouzhuang of Chongqing”. Time seems to freeze here, as if traveling back a hundred years. There are many century-old stores here, such as taverns, silk shops, and grain stores, still maintaining traditional ways of life, making people feel like they are in ancient times. If not for a big fire, this would have been a popular spot for many tourists.

The ancient town is not big, but there is a large grassy area inside which is perfect for picnicking and sunbathing.
