From wandering the timeworn streets of Pingyao Ancient City to exploring majestic temples and ancient fortresses, this itinerary captures the essence of Shanxi’s cultural treasures and natural beauty.


Day 1: Pingyao Ancient City

Start your adventure in Pingyao with a morning visit to the Pingyao Ancient City Wall (平遥古城墙). Climb the city walls and enjoy panoramic views of the well-preserved ancient city below, offering a glimpse into the past. Next, head to the Pingyao Ancient County Yamen (平遥古县衙), where you can learn about the administrative history of this historic city. Continue your exploration with a visit to the Pingyao Confucian Temple (平遥文庙), an important cultural and educational center in ancient China, and the City God Temple (城隍庙), dedicated to protecting the city. The peaceful Qingxu Temple (清虚观) is another great stop to enjoy tranquil surroundings and traditional architecture.

After lunch, head to the Rishengchang Exchange Shop (日升昌票号), one of the oldest and most famous exchange shops of the Jin merchants, and the City Tower (市楼), where you can learn about Pingyao’s historical importance in ancient trade. Day 2: Wang Family Courtyard → Zhangbi Ancient Castle

Renowned as “China’s First Courtyard,” this grand complex showcases stunning craftsmanship in its intricate wood carvings and architectural design.
