Zhenjiang Travel Guide
Zhenjiang, located in the southwest of Jiangsu Province on the southern bank of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, is an ancient city with a history spanning over 3000 years, known historically as “Runzhou” and “Jingkou.” Here, the sophistication of a southern Jiangnan city converges with the classical beauty of a historical renowned city.
Nestled amidst the hills of Jiangnan, Zhenjiang is renowned for its mountainous landscapes, with Jingshan, Jiaoshan, and Beigushan forming the diverse Three Mountains Scenic Area. The “Three Mountains of Jingkou” have long been famous scenic spots, attracting scholars and literati throughout history. Xin Qiji admired the grandeur of Beigushan: “Where else to gaze upon our vast land? The panoramic view from Beigu Tower is breathtaking.” Zheng Banqiao cherished the tranquility of Jiaoshan: “In a quiet house on Jiaoshan, there are fifteen families, each with bamboo and fences.” Zhang Hu appreciated the transcendence of Jingshan: “One night at Jingshan Temple, detached from the world.”
Zhenjiang is a quiet small city, devoid of the hustle and bustle found in other major cities of the Yangtze River Delta. Whether strolling through the ancient and picturesque Xijin Ferry or along the millennia-old Grand Canal, one can’t help but be transported back in time, experiencing the rich historical heritage accumulated over thousands of years.
