Biandukou Scenic Area (扁都口风景区, Biandukou Pass) spans 10 kilometers north to south and averages 6 kilometers east to west, covering a total area of 60 square kilometers with a core area of 9 square kilometers. Situated at an altitude of around 2800 meters, the scenic area experiences a maximum summer temperature below 30°C and winter temperatures dropping to as low as -20°C.
Surrounded by abundant natural beauty, including vast fields of rapeseed flowers, highland pastures, and deep valleys, Biandukou offers captivating landscapes and rich cultural sights. The area features facilities such as an international self-driving campsite, capsule hotels, car lodges, barbecue cabins, grassland camping bases, and an eco-friendly horse riding trail.
The best time to visit is during the blooming season of rapeseed flowers in June and July, when observation decks, resting areas, and camping zones are fully equipped, making it an ideal destination for self-driving tours and outdoor activities.

Location and Transportation
Biandukou Scenic Area is situated in the southeastern part of Minle County, Zhangye City, Gansu Province, nestled in the heart of the Qilian Mountains. It is approximately 28 kilometers north of Minle County’s urban center. To get there, you can choose one of the following ways:
By Train and Bus:
- From Zhangye East Station, take the express bus directly to Biandukou, with the first departure from Zhangye at 8:00 AM and the last departure from Biandukou around 8:00 PM.
- Local buses from Minle South Station to Biandukou operate from 7:00 AM (first departure) to 7:00 PM (last departure).
By Car:
- The recommended route is to drive or hire a car. Follow the Zhangye – Minle – Biandukou route along National Road 227. This route offers picturesque landscapes and good road conditions.
- Travel southeast from Minle County after reaching the county town via National Road 227, continuing for approximately 15 kilometers.
Highlights of Biandukou Scenic Area
Biandukou Gorge
Biandukou Gorge, also known historically as Doudouba Valley, is the centerpiece of the scenic area. Stretching about 30 kilometers from north to south and surrounded by towering cliffs, the gorge presents a dramatic and awe-inspiring landscape.
As you enter the gorge, you’ll be struck by the sheer scale of the cliffs, which rise steeply on either side of the river flowing through the valley. The rugged terrain and turbulent waters create a sense of grandeur and mystery. The area is also home to lush meadows, vibrant wildflowers, and diverse wildlife. Look out for animals such as wild rabbits, snow chickens, deer, roe deer, wolves, and even leopards. Historically, Biandukou Gorge was a strategic military pass connecting the Hexi Corridor to the northern regions, making it a significant location in ancient battles.
Black Wind Cave
Black Wind Cave, located within the Biandukou Scenic Area, is a site steeped in historical legend. In 121 BC, General Huo Qubing of the Han Dynasty led a massive army through the treacherous terrain of the Qilian Mountains to challenge the Xiongnu Empire. As the troops were advancing, a sudden black wind swept through the gorge, blocking their path.
According to legend, Huo Qubing climbed to the top of the mountain and discovered that the black wind was emanating from a cave. With great determination, he and his soldiers worked tirelessly through the night to block the cave’s entrance with thousands of pine and cypress trees. Once the black wind was contained, the army was able to continue their campaign and achieve a significant victory over the Xiongnu. The cave is now a symbol of bravery and perseverance, though its steep, moss-covered entrance is challenging to access.
Stone Buddha Rock Paintings
Situated on the steep cliffs to the east of Yangga Gorge, the Stone Buddha Rock Paintings are a significant cultural and historical site. Approximately three meters above the ground and covering an area of about 1.7 square meters, these ancient artworks depict a serene Buddha figure.
Legend has it that during a journey through the gorge, the Buddha and his disciples stopped to offer encouragement to weary travelers. The Buddha left his image on the rock to inspire and protect those who passed through the valley. The Stone Buddha Rock Paintings represent a harmonious blend of Tibetan and Han cultural elements, symbolizing the unity between different ethnic groups. Visitors often come to pay their respects and seek blessings, believing in the cave’s spiritual significance.
