Changsha Museum – Home to over 50,000 Cultural Relics

Changsha Museum

Changsha Museum (长沙博物馆) was established in 1986, with its new building opening on December 28, 2015. The museum consists of five floors and covers an area of 24,000 square meters. It houses over 50,000 cultural relics that span from the Paleolithic era to modern times, showcasing the historical and cultural development of Changsha. Among its notable collections are bronzeware from the Shang and Zhou dynasties, artifacts from the Chu-Han period, porcelain from the Tang Dynasty’s Changsha kiln, and modern relics.

The museum features two main exhibitions: the Ancient History and Culture of Changsha and the Modern History and Culture of Changsha. Additionally, it regularly updates its special exhibitions and hosts exchange exhibitions.

Architecturally, the Changsha Museum is designed to resemble a “stubborn stone.” The exterior wall displays a map of Changsha from the early 20th century, and the facade incorporates elements reminiscent of bamboo slips. Notable locations in Changsha, such as Baisha Well, Pozi Street, and Orange Isle, are represented using an ancient style of Chinese font, marking eighteen familiar place names for locals. The exterior is also adorned with a depiction of the Xiang River flowing gently along the walls, adding to its cultural significance.
