Guide to Tianmen Mountain Glass Skywalk

Tianmen Mountain Glass Skywalk

The Tianmen Mountain Glass Skywalk (天门山玻璃栈道) is a thrilling attraction located on the west side of Tianmen Mountain in Zhangjiajie, Hunan Province. The skywalk stretches 60 meters in length and 1.6 meters in width, with its highest point at an elevation of 1,430 meters above sea level. Officially opened to the public on October 1, 2011, it is a notable addition to Tianmen Mountain’s array of daring attractions, following the cliffside Ghost Valley Skywalk and the cantilevered Glass Viewing Platform.

To ensure a pristine view through the glass bridge, visitors are required to wear shoe covers to maintain its transparency and cleanliness. The Glass Skywalk offers an exhilarating experience that rivals the famous Grand Canyon Skywalk in the U.S., earning it the nickname “Eastern Skywalk.”

The skywalk provides an intense sensory experience. On clear days, the reflections of blue skies and white clouds create a mesmerizing effect, making the transparent pathway both thrilling and enjoyable. In foggy conditions, the glass walkway appears ethereal, blending with the mist and offering a breathtakingly surreal experience.

To access the Glass Skywalk, visitors need to purchase an entry ticket for Tianmen Mountain, priced at 258 yuan. For those opting to use the forest cable car to reach the top, an additional one-way fee of 25 yuan per person is required. Walking on the skywalk itself incurs a fee of 5 yuan for the shoe covers and a 5 yuan deposit (which is refunded if the shoe covers are returned undamaged).

Tianmen Mountain’s core scenic area experiences a temperature difference of about 5-10°C compared to the city. In summer, while the city may reach 39°C, the mountain’s temperature is around 30°C. It is advisable to bring sunscreen for sunny weather and a light blanket for the cooler nights. For autumn and winter visits, layering with a coat or thin wool sweater is recommended. Seniors and those sensitive to the cold should wear additional layers. Proper non-slip footwear is essential, and it’s also wise to carry an umbrella or rainwear due to the frequent rain in the area.
