Haoyue Garden (皓月å›), also known as Moonlight Garden, is located in the southeast of Gulangyu Island, adjacent to the Lujiang River. It was established to commemorate the historical achievements of Zheng Chenggong (Koxinga) in expelling the Dutch and reclaiming Taiwan for China. The garden spans over 20,000 square meters and its name is derived from a line in one of Zheng Chenggong’s poems: “Thinking of you, I cannot sleep; the bright moon shines through the thin curtains.” This reflects both a remembrance of the hero and a longing for the compatriots in Taiwan.
A prominent feature of Haoyue Garden is the colossal statue of Zheng Chenggong standing atop Fuding Rock, which extends 30 meters into the sea and rises to an elevation of 29.5 meters. The statue, completed on August 27, 1985, stands 15.7 meters tall and weighs 1,617 tons. It is composed of 625 meticulously carved pieces of Quanzhou white granite arranged in 23 layers, making it the largest statue of a historical figure in China. The garden also houses a large bronze relief sculpture that vividly depicts the historical scene of Zheng Chenggong leading his troops across the sea to reclaim Taiwan from Dutch control.
Within Haoyue Garden, visitors can find two sets of commemorative stele corridors dedicated to Zheng Chenggong. The northern corridor features eight of Zheng Chenggong’s poems, four of which are in his own handwriting. The southern corridor includes 13 inscriptions of couplets and poems from figures such as Emperor Kangxi, the governor of Taiwan, and the modern poet Guo Moruo, offering a balanced evaluation of Zheng Chenggong’s contributions. Additionally, the Zheng Chenggong Micro-Carving Exhibition Hall showcases thousands of micro-carved art pieces themed around Zheng Chenggong’s efforts to resist the Qing dynasty and recover Taiwan. These artworks are highly valuable for both viewing and collection.
Haoyue Garden’s architecture primarily emulates the style of the Ming Dynasty, characterized by blue glazed tiles, stone gates, stone columns, stone terraces, stone steps, stone railings, and stone paths. These elements, combined with the natural surroundings of blue skies, sandy beaches, sea waves, trees, and giant rocks, create a picturesque and serene environment, highlighting the garden’s elegance and grandeur.
