Hengqin Island (横琴岛), located in Zhuhai, is the largest of the city’s 146 islands, stretching 8.6 kilometers from north to south and 7 kilometers from east to west. It boasts a coastline of 76 kilometers and is separated from Macau’s three islands by just a narrow river. The island features numerous bays, long stretches of sandy beaches, and striking rock formations, while preserving its pristine natural vegetation and offering fresh, clean air.
Hengqin Island consists of two parts: Greater Hengqin Island and Lesser Hengqin Island. Due to its topography and mountain shapes, the two islands resemble ancient zithers lying on the waters of the South China Sea, with the wind and waves playing a continuous song of mountains, wind, and sea for millennia.
The island is rich in tourism resources and is particularly known for its oysters, famous for their size, plumpness, whiteness, tenderness, and crispness. These oysters are a renowned delicacy in Zhuhai and attract visitors from the Pearl River Delta and beyond, especially during holidays, to savor their unique flavors. Popular tourist attractions on the island include Tianhu Scenic Area, Sandie Spring, Ocean Park, and Stone Expo Park.
With the opening of the Hengqin Bridge and the Lotus Bridge, Hengqin Island is now seamlessly connected to both downtown Zhuhai and Macau, serving as the second land route between mainland China and Macau. It is also a hub for major highways such as the Guangzhou-Zhuhai and Jiangmen-Zhuhai expressways, further enhancing its accessibility.
