Yichang Travel Guide
Yichang, abbreviated as Yi, is located in the southwestern part of Hubei Province. Historically known as Yiling, its name reflects the geographic significance of “where the river smoothens and the mountains rise.” During the Yongzheng period of the Qing Dynasty, it was renamed Yichang, symbolizing prosperity and flourishing growth.
Yichang is rich in tourism resources, with numerous attractions spread throughout the city. The grandiosity of the Three Gorges Dam, the ancient Sanyou Cave, the mystical Baima Cave, and the picturesque Dongshan Scenic Area are some of its highlights. The city also features the scenic Taohua New Village, the riverside gallery, the vibrant night scenes of city squares, and landmarks such as Yichang Natural Tower and Zhenjiang Pavilion.
The Baiguoshu Waterfall, cascading down with immense force, is a magnificent sight to behold. The Lovers’ Spring, with its elegant and intertwined stalactites, resembles lovers in a tight embrace. The hometown of Wang Zhaojun, a beautiful landscape rich with enduring legends, adds to the city’s allure.
In Yichang, the natural beauty complemented by the Yangtze River and the rich Ba and Chu cultural influences create a unique charm. This riverside city exudes an irresistible appeal, making it a captivating destination for tourists seeking both scenic beauty and cultural depth.
The high-speed train from Wuhan to Yichang takes about 2 hours, which is quite convenient. However, the distances between various attractions in Yichang are relatively far apart (generally over 1 hour). If possible, I recommend driving or renting a car; it would be more comfortable. (We rented a car for two days for around ¥370, plus gas, totaling under ¥600.)
Recommendation for the Qingjiang Gallery and G348 Road:
You can enjoy the entire journey on G348! Unfortunately, we were too rushed and just passed through.
Make sure to try the fat fish in Yichang!
Both the grilled and spicy boiled preparations are incredibly delicious!
During the National Day holiday, you can visit the Qingjiang Gallery in Yichang. This is the perfect time of year, with neither too hot nor too cold weather. Standing by the boat and enjoying the breeze is really refreshing. I wouldn’t recommend going in the summer, though, as it gets very hot!
Why did I choose to come to Yichang instead of Shennongjia? It’s really hot here. I couldn’t catch the ferry shuttle and had to wait for several trips. However, the scenery in the area is quite nice; the waterfalls are refreshing. The management, though, is a bit chaotic—despite the number of visitors, there weren’t clear schedules for departures or organized queueing channels.
The weather in Yichang has been really hot these past couple of days. The outdoor attractions are unbearable, especially the Three Gorges Tribe!
However, the indoor venues offer a refreshing escape. The Yichang Museum is both enjoyable and cool, featuring various animal specimens that look incredibly lifelike.
Travel Tips: 1. When visiting Yichang, it is best to stay near the Three Gorges Tourist Center or Wanda Plaza, where you can find everything you need for eating, drinking, and entertainment. 2. Fun places to visit in Yichang include Three Gorges Tribe Village, Three Gorges Waterfall, Qingjiang Gallery, and Che Xi Night Cruise. These attractions are a bit far from the city center, so plan your time accordingly. 3. If you have to choose between Three Gorges Tribe Village… Read more »
When traveling to Yichang, I recommend staying near Wanda. ✓ Pros: Very close to the Three Gorges Tourist Center, within walking distance, very convenient for people planning to visit the two dams and one gorge. ❌ Cons: A bit far from eating places and Huangbai River Ferry Terminal, but not too far. Most restaurants are located in CBD. To visit Sanxia Renjia, you need to take a boat from Huangbai River Ferry Terminal, so you may need to take a… Read more »
