Jade Valley (翡翠谷, Feicui Valley), also known as Lover’s Valley (情人谷), is a stunning natural wonder located near the southern gate of the Huangshan Mountain Scenic Area. Conveniently close to National Highway 205 and the He-Tong-Huang Expressway, this enchanting valley stretches for approximately 20 kilometers. The valley is traversed by the Biyu Stream, which originates from several famous peaks, including Liandan, Shixin, and Tiannü. The valley is famous for its towering rocks, cascading waters, and awe-inspiring landscapes.
Jade Valley is renowned for its over one hundred colorful pools, each varying in size and shape. The water in these pools is crystal clear and vividly green, with the bottoms adorned with vibrant pebbles. The surrounding landscape is equally captivating, with each pool reflecting the ever-changing sunlight in a dazzling array of hues, from bright green to sparkling clear. The interplay of light and shadow across these pools creates a dynamic and mesmerizing scene, earning the valley its name, as the pools resemble scattered pieces of jade throughout the gorge.
Jade Valley gained international fame when it served as a filming location for the Oscar-winning film “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.” Iconic scenes, such as the bamboo forest fight, romantic moments by the pool, and the breathtaking waterfall stunts, were all shot in this picturesque setting.
In 1988, a group of 36 young men and women from Shanghai visited Huangshan Mountain and happened upon this valley. At that time, the area was undeveloped, with rough and even impassable paths. The group had to support and encourage each other as they navigated the difficult terrain, eventually overcoming the challenges and emerging safely. After returning to Shanghai, ten couples from the group eventually married, many of whom had met for the first time in Jade Valley. This romantic connection led to the valley’s affectionate nickname, Lover’s Valley.
Adding to the valley’s allure are the stone carvings by famous Chinese figures such as Qi Gong, Yuan Xiaoyuan, Zhang Zhen, Chi Haotian, Fu Jie, Wang Zhen, and Tian Jiyun. Among the most notable attractions is the “Love” Stele, which features the character for love written in one hundred different styles by famous calligraphers from various dynasties. Another remarkable feature is the large “Love” stone, measuring 4.6 meters in length and 4.5 meters in width, located on the slope near Danqing Pool. It is said that the character for love on this stone was taken from the famous Song dynasty poet Su Shi‘s handwriting. The large, bright red character stretches across the rock, with each side measuring about 5 meters. The unique design of this character even allows two people to sit together on the “heart” of the character, symbolizing a heartfelt and devoted love.
