Highlights of Jiabang Rice Terraces
The rice terraces cultivated by the Miao ethnic group follow the contours of the mountains, adapting to the changes in terrain. The unique topography of Jiabang determines that the size and form of the terraces vary based on the elevation, slope, and size of the mountainsides. Here, the maximum size of a terrace is rarely more than one mu, with most fields limited to one or two rows, forming fragmented plots, some as small as a winnowing basket, and the longest terrace reaching up to two to three hundred meters.
The beauty of the terraces unfolds like a picturesque painting throughout the seasons. The months of April and May mark the season of water irrigation, where the terraces, after being irrigated, shimmer with a silvery glow, accentuating their graceful and winding contours. In summer, the terraces showcase waves of lush green rice paddies, resembling ribbons of vibrant green swaying in the wind. The golden hues of harvested rice, combined with the green cover crops and the tranquil Miao hanging-foot houses scattered across the fields, create a stunning landscape resembling a beautiful Chinese ink painting.
The terraced fields are interspersed with the distinctive hanging-foot houses of the Miao people, resembling planets dotting the galaxy. Adjacent to the Jache River, with abundant rainfall throughout the year, the terraced fields and Miao hanging-foot houses are shrouded in morning mist as it rises slowly from the riverbank. This picturesque scene unfolds each day, creating an ethereal ambiance where the hanging-foot houses and terraced fields, veiled in mist, blend harmoniously with the natural surroundings. The quiet villages, small hamlets, and the terraced landscape harmonize with nature, epitomizing the beauty of symbiosis between humanity and the natural world in Jiabang.
Perhaps due to the light rain today, the Jiabang Terraced Fields were the quietest attraction I encountered during the Spring Festival. There were hardly any cars on the way, and I could easily count the few that passed by from the opposite direction. Upon arriving at the site, I found out that there were no shuttle buses today, so we needed to drive ourselves. However, judging by the facilities, it seems that there is good operation and maintenance on regular… Read more »
The off-season Jiabang Terraces are absolutely beautiful! Walking on the deserted country road while listening to music is simply too delightful.
In the off-season at the Jiabang Rice Terraces, we entered around 4 PM and felt like we were the only ones there; we didn’t see any tourist shuttles (though we drove in ourselves). There were only four of us at the guesthouse. The scenery is beautiful! We spent the whole time discussing whether the local indigenous people who live here are happy, seeing such magnificent terraces and lush greenery every day.
I went a few days late; the golden rice was already harvested by October 8th.
“National Geographic” does not mislead me; the hours spent driving were worth it. It’s incredibly beautiful!
Upon arriving here, I was surrounded by vast expanses of greenery and endless terraced fields. The cool evening breeze felt incredibly pleasant and refreshing. After dinner, at nine o’clock, I stepped outside. With no extraneous light sources, what I saw was a sky full of stars and the Milky Way.
I captured the Milky Way for the first time using my phone. The rice terraces in Jiabang Tianta are truly beautiful. I only planned a day trip today, but I must stay for two days next time.
From June to July, the rice in Jiabang Terraces is in the stage of seedlings, creating a sea of greenery as far as the eye can see.
The best viewpoints are platforms 1, 5, and 6. Platform 1 offers a panoramic view of Dongpeng Terraces, which is very spectacular and worth a visit. I particularly enjoyed platform 5, where there is a coffee shop (don’t expect too much from the taste). You can order a cup of coffee and leisurely make your way up, taking about 15 minutes to reach the village. Here, you can experience the vibrant local life. The locals do not overly focus on… Read more »
