Jujing Village – China’s Roundest Village

Jujing Village Wuyuan

Nestled in Shangrao City, Jiangxi Province, Jujing Village (菊径村) is renowned for its unique layout and rich cultural heritage. The village is encircled by a semi-circular river and surrounded by towering mountains, creating a natural amphitheater. The aerial view from the hillside opposite the village reveals its striking circular shape, earning it the nickname “Face Basin Village” from locals.

Jujing is a serene and ancient mountain village, predominantly inhabited by the He family. According to the “He Clan Genealogy” from the Qing Dynasty, the ancestors of the He clan settled here during the Qiandao era of the Song Dynasty. Over centuries, the family has flourished, making the He clan prominent in the region.

At the village’s entrance stands an ancestral hall beside a large camphor tree. Behind the village, well-preserved watershed forests cover the mountains. A newly constructed asphalt road follows the river’s arc, circling the village and connecting to wooden bridges that blend seamlessly with the natural landscape. The dense village, with its quaint bridges, flowing river, and encircling mountains, resembles a paradise untouched by time. If not for the modern road, Jujing would remain a tranquil haven, a true utopia.

Jujing Village dates back to the early Song Dynasty and is celebrated as “China’s Roundest Village” and “China’s Bagua Village.” The village boasts several cultural relics, including the Song Dynasty He Clan Ancestral Hall. This hall once housed an imperial plaque granted by the Chongzhen Emperor of the Ming Dynasty in the first year of his reign, inscribed with “黄阁调元,” meaning “Ascending to the position of Prime Minister, overseeing the governance of the empire.” Although the plaque has been stolen, the village still holds many historical treasures.

While Jujing Village itself has few notable attractions, it is a popular stopover for travelers between Shicheng and Qinghua Town. Visitors often pause to admire the village’s scenic beauty, climbing the small hill opposite the village for a panoramic view. The village, encircled by mountains and water, offers a stunning vista, especially when captured with a wide-angle lens or panoramic mode on a smartphone.
