Juyan Lake (居延海, Juyanhai), shaped like a crescent moon, is the terminal lake of the Heihe River, China’s second-largest inland river. Historically known as Juyanze during the Han Dynasty, it served as a crucial frontline base against the Xiongnu. The lake derives its name from the Heihe River, which originates deep in the Qilian Mountains and traverses over 800 kilometers through Qinghai, Gansu, and Inner Mongolia. Finally, it merges into two Gobi depressions at the northwestern edge of the Badain Jaran Desert, forming what we now refer to as Juyan Lake.
Once a vast expanse, Juyan Lake was one of the largest lakes in northwest China. Today, it comprises primarily the Eastern Juyan Lake (also known as Subo Zhuo’er) and the Western Juyan Lake (Gashun Zhuo’er), along with a few other smaller lakes. The region surrounding Juyan Lake features beautiful grasslands with fertile soil and abundant water resources, making it one of the earliest agricultural areas in China, with cultivation activities dating back to the Han Dynasty. Its strategic location also established it as a significant passage through the Badain Jaran Desert and the Great Gobi, making it a critical stronghold throughout history.
Currently, the popular destination for tourists is the Eastern Juyan Lake, as the other lakes have largely dried up. However, the Western Juyan Lake has begun to recover due to ongoing water replenishment efforts. The two lakes are approximately 35 kilometers apart, with an average water depth of about 1.5 meters. Visitors to Juyan Lake can enjoy its serene waters, characterized by gentle ripples that reflect the sky, while the shores are lined with dense reeds.
The lake is also home to various fish species, including carp, crucian carp, bighead carp, and grass carp. Birdwatchers will delight in spotting swans, wild geese, cranes, and water ducks, which frequently visit the area. The unique combination of rich historical significance, stunning natural beauty, and diverse wildlife makes Juyan Lake a captivating destination for tourists and nature enthusiasts alike.
