Linfen Museum – Learn about Ancient Jin State

Linfen Museum

Linfen Museum (临汾博物馆) covers a total area of 32,429 square meters, with a building height of 23.65 meters and approximately 2,000 square meters of exhibition space. The museum houses 140,000 cultural relics, with a special focus on bronze artifacts, ceramics, Shui Lu paintings, and woodblock New Year paintings. In December 2020, Linfen Museum was recognized as a National First-Class Museum. The museum’s exhibits are divided into four main sections:

Ancient Footprints: This exhibition is divided into three parts—“Fenhe Residents,” “Passing the Torch,” and “Cradle of Civilization.” It showcases the long history of early humans in Linfen, from their ancient origins to the agricultural revolution. The exhibition draws on archaeological findings from sites such as Dingcun, Shizitan, and Xueguan, integrating geological history and the origins of humanity.

The Earliest China: Divided into “Harmony of Heaven and Earth,” “Rise and Fall of the Imperial City,” and “Yao Establishes China,” this section explores the Taosi culture, which emerged in southern Shanxi around 4,500 years ago. This period corresponds to the legendary Yao and Shun eras, considered the earliest “China” in pre-Qin history, laying the foundation for Chinese civilization.

Spring and Autumn Era of Jin Hegemony: This section consists of five parts—“Stars Spread Across the Sky,” “Brilliance of Sun and Moon,” “Stars Surrounding the Moon,” “Three Stars in Jin,” and “Dazzling Starlight.” It presents the history and glory of the State of Jin, the most powerful of the Five Hegemons during the Spring and Autumn period.

Thousand-Year Pingyang: This exhibition is divided into five parts—“Evolution of Pingyang,” “History’s Iron Witness,” “On Stage,” “Flowing Melody of Ping River,” and “Light of Prajna.” It showcases the ancient culture of Pingyang, highlighting the unique regional characteristics of the area.
