The Luoyang National Peony Garden (洛阳国家牡丹园), also known as the China Luoyang National Peony Gene Bank, is a botanical marvel situated in Luoyang. Established in 1978, this sprawling garden spans an impressive 700 acres and is divided into two sections: the South and North zones. It serves as a repository for over 600 domestic peony cultivars, 6 wild species, and the breeding ground for 72 new varieties, totaling over 500,000 peony plants. Additionally, it boasts over 100 foreign horticultural varieties, comprising 50,000 plants. Among its treasures is the famed “Millennium Peony King,” a relic from the Sui Dynasty’s West Garden, located in the southern sector of the garden, regarded as the living symbol of Luoyang’s peony heritage.
The National Peony Garden stands as one of the primary birthplaces for peony cultivation and propagation in China, often referred to as the “hometown of peonies.” Benefiting from favorable climatic and soil conditions, the garden provides an ideal environment for peony growth. Renowned for their large, vibrant blooms, rich colors, intense fragrances, and extended flowering periods, peonies here have earned the esteemed reputation of being “the best around the world.”
The architectural style within the garden is as distinctive as its botanical treasures. Embracing the essence of the Sui Dynasty’s West Garden and the Tang Dynasty’s Imperial Garden, it preserves the classical style of private gardens from the Song and Ming Dynasties. Within its borders lie antiquated pavilions, corridors adorned with peonies, thematic sculptures, artificial lakes, cascading waterfalls, and scenic water features, all contributing to the garden’s charm and aesthetic appeal. Additionally, the garden hosts a Peony Exhibition Hall where visitors can enjoy the beauty of peonies in bloom throughout the year, as if every season were spring.
The blooming season of Luoyang peonies typically occurs in April, with the optimal viewing time around April 15th. During this period, both early and late-blooming peonies are in full splendor, presenting a breathtaking spectacle to visitors.
