maotai town guizhou

Maotai Town (茅台镇) is situated on the banks of the Chishui River, serving as a vital transportation hub for water and land routes between Sichuan and Guizhou Province. Nestled in the lush riverside area, it is home to the “Red Army Martyrs Cemetery” and the “Red Army Crossing Memorial,” with the Chishui River navigation traversing the entire region. Renlian, Maodan, Maoxi, and Zunmao highways converge here.

Historically, Maotai Town has been renowned as a prominent town in northern Guizhou, epitomized by the saying “Sichuan salt flows to Guizhou, and Qin merchants gather in Maotai.” It is hailed as the holy land of Chinese liquor, with a flourishing Baijiu industry. In 1915, Maotai Liquor won the gold medal at the Panama Pacific International Exposition. In 1935, during the Long March of the Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army, the Red Army crossed the Chishui River three times near Maotai and its vicinity. Maotai Town integrates ancient salt culture, Long March culture, and liquor culture, earning it the title of “China’s No.1 Liquor Town.”

The National Liquor Culture City, with an investment of nearly 100 million yuan by the China Kweichow Moutai Distillery (Group) Co., Ltd., is located within the Moutai Distillery. It covers an area of over 40 acres and comprises seven pavilions representing architectural styles from the Han, Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming, Qing, and modern periods. These pavilions encapsulate the splendid history and essence of Chinese liquor culture and reflect the development process of Moutai liquor. The diverse array of buildings forms a continuous cityscape. Inside the pavilions, various calligraphy and paintings, sculptures, couplets, and artifacts depict liquor customs, techniques, stories, and significant figures related to liquor, making it the largest liquor culture museum and a comprehensive carrier of Chinese liquor culture of the highest caliber, listed in the Guinness World Records.
