Memorial Temple of Lord Bao, Hefei

Memorial Temple Of Lord Bao Hefei

The Memorial Temple of Lord Bao (包公祠) was first built during the Ming Dynasty and reconstructed in the Qing Dynasty. Covering an area of 10,000 square meters, it features a traditional enclosed courtyard design with white walls and blue tiles. The main building, the Baogong Pavilion, houses a grand statue of Bao Zheng (Lord Bao) and a black stone carving of him, symbolizing his integrity and the essence of his famous “iron-faced” justice.

To the west of the pavilion is a winding corridor, while the east side boasts a hexagonal Longjing Pavilion, which stands above an ancient well known as “廉泉 Lianquan” (Clear Spring). Inside the main hall, a statue of Lord Bao, approximately eight feet tall, presents him with prominent eyebrows and a dignified expression, flanked by four loyal guardians.

A notable plaque inscribed with “色正芒寒 Se Zheng Mang Han,” emphasizes Lord Bao’s unwavering commitment to justice and integrity. This plaque was written by Li Hanzhang and calligraphed by Jing Tao.

Additionally, there is a wax museum on the east side of the hall, showcasing lifelike wax figures that depict stories from Bao Zheng’s life. The hexagonal pavilion in the southeast corner adds a charming touch to the temple grounds, featuring the ancient “Lianquan Well.”

Bao Zheng (999–1062 AD), a renowned politician from the Northern Song Dynasty, was celebrated for his integrity and strict enforcement of the law. He served in various governmental roles and was known for his fearlessness against corruption and power. After his death, he was posthumously honored with the title of Minister of Rites and given the posthumous name “Xiao Su.”
