Shiyan Lake Scenic Area (石燕湖风景区) is located at the intersection of Changsha, Zhuzhou, and Xiangtan in Hunan Province, China, covering an area of ten square kilometers. The scenic area features various historical and cultural attractions, including Tiaoma Gorge, Guandi Ancient Spring, the Ming Dynasty Tomb of King Jian, and the ancestral tomb of Shaoqi. Additionally, it is home to the famous Tiaoma Gorge Standard Group Rocks, dating back to the Devonian period, approximately 300 million years ago.
One of the major highlights of Shiyan Lake is dragon boat racing, which is especially popular during the vibrant autumn season when the maple trees turn golden. Location and Transportation
Shiyan Lake is located in Tiaoma Town, Yuhua District, Changsha, Hunan Province. To reach the scenic area, you can take Bus No. 229 and get off at the Shiyan Lake Scenic Area Station. From there, it’s about a 5-minute walk to the entrance of the lake.

San Shi Peak
Shiyan Lake boasts several notable highlights that enhance its appeal as a tourist destination. One of the main attractions is San Shi Peak, the highest peak among Changsha, Zhuzhou, and Xiangtan. Known for its steep cliffs and rugged terrain, this area served as a hideout for bandits before liberation, originally named Zhaizi Ridge. Climbing to the summit offers breathtaking views, allowing visitors to gaze northward at Changsha, southward at Zhuzhou, and westward at Xiangtan, providing a panoramic vista of the three cities.
Zhusha Island and Jin Gui Island
Zhusha Island and Jin Gui Island are also significant features of Shiyan Lake. Legend has it that Zhu Yuanzhang, the founding emperor of the Ming Dynasty, fell gravely ill while campaigning in the area. In his moment of need, he encountered a mountain deity who offered him some vermilion powder, leading to his recovery. This tale inspired the naming of Zhusha Island. Jin Gui Island, on the other hand, derives its name from its shape, resembling a turtle resting in the water. On clear days at dawn, the sun reflects off the water’s surface, creating a golden radiance around the turtle’s shell, leading observers to marvel at its resemblance to a golden tortoise.
Wanfuwanshou Tower
Another highlight is the Wanfuwanshou Tower, which stands at 268 meters and consists of seven levels, featuring a spiral staircase with 101 steps. Ancient wisdom suggests that climbing mountains fills one’s heart with joy and gazing at the sea enhances one’s spirit.
