Shudu Lake (属都湖) is one of the largest highland lakes in Shangri-La, situated at an altitude of 3,705 meters. Covering a water area of 15 square kilometers, the lake is encircled by mountains and boasts an average annual temperature of 35°C and a substantial annual rainfall of 5,800 millimeters, with the rainy season predominantly occurring from June to October.
In autumn, the birch forests on the eastern side of Shudu Lake turn a vibrant gold, creating a striking contrast with the surrounding spruces and firs. In Tibetan, “Shu” means cheese, and “Du” means stone, thus Shudu Lake can be interpreted as “Cheese Stone Lake.”
The lake’s crystal-clear waters are home to the unique “Shudu split-belly fish,” distinguished by its golden body and a split-like mark on its belly, known for its delicate and delicious flesh. The lake also serves as a habitat for various bird species, including wild ducks and yellow ducks.

Highlihgts of Shudu Lake
Morning Mist
Shudu Lake is the first scenic spot within Pudacuo National Park, renowned for its “morning mist reflections.” During the late autumn mornings, particularly between 7 and 9 a.m. before sunrise, the combination of clear skies and the lake’s surface condensation creates a mesmerizing misty landscape that draws countless photographers. To witness this ethereal sight, visitors must take the first bus in the morning, as the mist disperses after sunrise, making the phenomenon fleeting.
High Plateau Meadow
The lake’s shoreline features a picturesque high plateau meadow, which bursts into bloom with wildflowers in spring and summer, and showcases a vibrant array of colors in autumn. A lakeside boardwalk offers an ideal way to explore this natural beauty. Visitors can take an eco-friendly shuttle to the boardwalk and then leisurely stroll, photograph, and soak in the serene landscape. The boardwalk ends at the shuttle station, where visitors can continue their journey to the next attraction, Militang Pasture.
Boat Ride
An additional attraction at Shudu Lake is the option to take a boat ride from one end of the lake to the other, offering another perspective of the lake’s beauty. The boat trip, which takes about 20 minutes, provides a relaxing way to experience the lake’s tranquil environment and observe the surrounding natural scenery.
