Tachuan Village (塔川村), also known as Tashang, is a captivating mountain village located in Yixian County, within the idyllic region of Xiaotaoyuan. The village is built against the mountains, with ancient residences featuring flying eaves and gracefully curved roofs, creating a tiered, orderly appearance. When viewed from a distance, the village resembles a towering pagoda standing tall in the valley, which is how it earned the name “Ta” – “Ta” meaning “pagoda” in Chinese. Moreover, a clear, winding stream flows through the village, adding a sense of vitality and serenity to the landscape, further justifying the “Chuan” in its name (meaning “river” ).
Tachuan Village is conveniently located just under two kilometers from Hongcun Village along the Hongsi Road. Upon arriving at the village entrance, visitors are greeted by several massive ancient trees, including camphor, cypress, and maple, which make up Tachuan’s first scenic spot, “The Five Towering Trees.” These trees, some of which require several people to encircle, have stood for centuries, bearing witness to the village’s long and storied history.
Autumn in Tachuan is particularly breathtaking, as the mountains are adorned with vibrant, multicolored foliage ranging from yellow and pale red to fiery crimson, creating a rich tapestry of hues. However, many overlook the village’s beauty in April when azaleas and rapeseed flowers bloom, turning Tachuan into a paradise of color. The traditional Hui-style architecture, with its white walls and dark tiles, peeks through the foliage, creating an almost surreal landscape that is as picturesque as it is serene.
Tachuan Village offers several scenic viewpoints, all located along County Road 102 and clearly marked with signposts. The first viewing platform is about 200 meters west of Tachuan, providing a great spot to photograph both Tachuan and Hengchuan villages. The second viewpoint requires a short climb up a small hill off the county road, offering a panoramic view of Tachuan. Continuing along the road for another 150 meters, the third viewpoint allows for more excellent shots of both Tachuan and Hengchuan. Further ahead, after rounding a bend in the road, a small hill rises on the right side, where the fourth viewpoint is located, also offering views of Tachuan and Hengchuan villages. The fifth and final viewpoint is near the entrance to the Hongcun Tunnel, offering a wide vista that encompasses Xieli, Fengdeng Village, and Qishu Lake in one sweeping view.
