Yuanjiajie (袁家界), covering an area of approximately 1,200 hectares with an average elevation of 1,074 meters, is located in the northern part of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. It is a gem nestled within the core scenic area of Wulingyuan, bordered by Jinbian Stream to the east, with a view of Yaotzi Village, and connected to Huangshizhai and Tianbofu to the south, while Tianzi Mountain lies to the west and Suoxiyu to the north.
Yuanjiajie is characterized by its vast and relatively gentle terrain, primarily composed of quartzite rock, situated on the northern slope of Shandao Gully. The name “Yuanjiajie” is believed to have originated during the Later Tang Dynasty. After the failure of the Huang Chao Rebellion, the imperial court issued orders to capture the rebels. A soldier named Yuan, serving under Huang Chao, sought refuge from persecution by hiding in the remote mountains of Qingyan. He established a dwelling, cultivated the land, and named the area after himself, thus coining the name “Yuanjiajie.”
From the observation platform at Yuanjiajie, visitors are treated to breathtaking views of thousands of unique peaks, showcasing a majestic and wild landscape with diverse formations. Towering stone pillars rise dramatically from the depths of the gorge, resembling valiant generals and brave warriors. The vivid shapes of the cliffs evoke a sense of movement and life, making the scenery appear almost lifelike. This stunning natural environment draws travelers from around the world, inviting them to explore its captivating beauty and rich history.

Location and Transportation
Yuanjiajie is located in the Wulingyuan District of Zhangjiajie City, Hunan Province, situated in the northern part of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. To reach Yuanjiajie, there are two main routes:
- Hiking from the “Jinbian Stream Grand Canyon”: This route takes you to the “Qianli Xianghui” fork in the middle section of the canyon. From there, you can hike up to Yuanjiajie via “Luan Cuan Po.” This option takes approximately two hours, but note that you will miss the stunning views at the later sections of Jinbian Stream.
- Taking the Baolong Elevator: A more efficient and scenic route involves exiting the Jinbian Stream Grand Canyon and passing through “Shui Rao Si Men” to the Baolong Elevator’s lower station. The elevator ride to Yuanjiajie takes only a few minutes, and at the top, free electric shuttle buses are available to take you to the Yuanjiajie parking lot.
For most visitors, the second option is recommended as it saves time and effort while allowing you to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Jinbian Stream’s later sections.
Highlights of Yuanjiajie Scenic Area
Heaven’s First Bridge (天下第一桥)

Heaven’s First Bridge is an extraordinary natural stone bridge, with a width of 2 meters, a thickness of 4 meters, a span of over 20 meters, and a height exceeding 300 meters, making it the tallest natural stone bridge discovered to date. Connecting two towering mountains, this bridge is not just a geological wonder but also an iconic symbol of Yuanjiajie.
Visitors can access the bridge via a scenic pathway that stretches over 2,000 meters from the “Back Garden” to Heaven’s First Bridge. The path is primarily paved with white stone slabs, resembling a silk ribbon adorned with two knots, one tied at “Mihun Platform” and the other at Heaven’s First Bridge.
As you stroll along this pathway, you can enjoy captivating sights such as “拜仙台” (Platform for Worshipping Immortals), “百丈绝壁” (Hundred Meter Perpendicular Cliffs), “小洞天” (Small Cave Heaven), and “情人谷” (Lover’s Valley). The altitude is moderate, making it less susceptible to adverse weather conditions. This leisurely exploration allows you to appreciate the breathtaking landscapes at a comfortable pace.
Sand Knife Gorge (沙刀沟)

Nestled between Huangshizhai and Yuanjiajie, Sand Knife Gorge is a long and enchanting canyon divided by a flowing stream. This stream meanders beneath Heaven’s First Bridge, creating a picturesque scene that captures the imagination. The origin of the name “Shadaogou” is steeped in local legend.
According to the tale, a grandfather, grandmother, and their young granddaughter lived in Yuanjiajie. One day, after collecting firewood, she returned home without her knife, prompting her grandparents to scold her harshly. In tears, the girl ventured into the mountains to find her lost knife. As darkness fell and the eerie sounds of the forest echoed around her, she became frightened and lost her way.
In a tragic turn, the girl fell from Heaven’s First Bridge into the abyss below, her spirit forever leaving the world she once knew. Legend has it that a small bird later emerged from the valley, crying out sorrowfully, “叨叨,婆叨叨,掉把弯刀,” which translates to “Old man, old woman, I dropped my curved knife.” This bird is said to embody the girl’s spirit, and locals still report hearing its mournful call late at night. In remembrance of the tragic fate of the little girl, the canyon was named “Sand Knife Gorge.” Today, this poignant story adds a layer of cultural significance to the stunning natural landscape, making it a unique destination within Yuanjiajie.
Hallelujah Mountain

On January 25, 2010, Zhangjiajie’s “Southern Sky Pillar” was officially renamed “Hallelujah Mountain” after the iconic film Avatar. This stunning peak stands at 1,074 meters above sea level, with a vertical height of approximately 150 meters. The mountain features lush vegetation at its summit and distinct vertical jointing that gives it a striking, knife-like appearance. Its impressive stature evokes a sense of grandeur, earning it the name “Qian Kun Pillar.” Hallelujah Mountain is part of Zhangjiajie’s famous “Three Thousand Peaks” and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
Bailong Elevator

The Bailong Elevator, completed in April 2002, is a marvel of engineering and is recognized as the highest and fastest sightseeing elevator in the world. With a vertical height difference of 335 meters, it reaches an operating height of 326 meters in just 118 seconds, making it a thrilling experience for visitors. Constructed at a cost of 180 million RMB, the elevator utilizes advanced technology developed by Germany’s Rangger International Elevator Company.
During the elevator ride, visitors are treated to a spectacular view of the “Gathering of Divine Weapons,” another of Zhangjiajie’s top attractions. This site features 48 independent stone peaks, historically significant as the meeting point for the Tujia uprising leaders against the ruling emperor. At the summit of this area, visitors can find small homes where local Tujia people have lived for generations, cultivating the land and maintaining a traditional lifestyle. This has earned the area the nickname “Sky Garden,” highlighting its beauty and cultural significance.
