Dandong Travel Guide
Dandong is a city located in the southeastern part of Liaoning Province, China. It lies across the Yalu River from North Korea and is just a short distance away from South Korea. Dandong is the starting point of China’s 18,000-kilometer coastline and holds the distinction of being the only city in Asia with a border port, airport, high-speed rail, river port, seaport, and highways.
Situated by the Yellow Sea and along the Yalu River, Dandong enjoys a temperate climate, with mild winters and cool summers, earning it the nickname “The Suzhou and Hangzhou of the Northeast.” The Yalu River, which separates China from North Korea, offers a unique view. From the riverbank, visitors can often glimpse the daily life of the North Korean people working in the fields.
One of Dandong’s must-visit landmarks is the Broken Bridge, which stands on the Chinese side of the Yalu River. The bridge was once part of a vital crossing point during the Korean War, when Chinese volunteer soldiers crossed it into North Korea. Although the bridge was destroyed during the war, remnants of bullet holes can still be seen on the structure, making it a poignant symbol of the past and a significant historical site.
