Highlights of Wuzhizhou Island

Wuzhizhou Island Tea House (蜈支洲岛茶馆)

Wuzhizhou Island, Sanya 1

During the Guangxu era of the Qing Dynasty, a wandering Taoist named Wu Huacun traveled across Hainan Island in search of a place to practice alchemy and self-cultivation. He ultimately chose Wuzhizhou Island for its favorable feng shui and planned to build a hermitage there. However, this caught the attention of the governor of Yazhou, Zhong Yuandi, who believed such a beautiful island should benefit the public rather than be claimed by an individual. He intervened and raised funds to construct a temple on the island, named “Hai Shang Han San Guan,” dedicated to Cangjie, the creator of Chinese characters. This initiative marked a significant moment in Hainan’s cultural history. Built in 1893, the red structure now serves as a charming tea house where visitors can enjoy a peaceful cup of tea amidst history.

Lover’s Bridge (情人桥)

Wuzhizhou Island, Sanya 2

Lover’s Bridge is a notable filming location for the Chinese New Year film “Private Custom.” Originally an iron chain bridge, it served as a lookout point for the island’s military forces. Crossing the swaying bridge requires a bit of courage and agility. Many visitors, eager to experience the view from the lookout but wary of falling into the sea, hold onto their friends tightly while crossing, which led to the playful nickname “Lover’s Bridge.” To ensure safety for guests, the island later transformed the original iron chain bridge into a wooden plank bridge, making it a popular romantic spot for couples.

Guanri Cliff (观日岩)

Wuzhizhou Island, Sanya 4

Guanri Cliff (Sunrise-Viewsing Cliff) is located on the southeastern edge of Wuzhizhou Island. Standing atop the cliff offers breathtaking views of the expansive South China Sea and the entire island, with the wind gently blowing in from the ocean. Below the cliff, you’ll find uniquely shaped rocks scattered along the shoreline. On calm days, visitors can take a speedboat tour around the island, marveling at the fascinating rock formations. One striking feature is Guanri Cliff itself, which resembles a natural stone Buddha gazing out to sea, meditating day and night. This spot is perfect for watching the dawn of a new century as the vibrant red sun rises gradually from the horizon, creating a stunning seascape. Guests staying on the island can inquire at the hotel front desk for the exact sunrise times.

Golden Tortoise Exploring the Sea (金龟探海)

Wuzhizhou Island, Sanya 5

Just below Guanyir Cliff on the southeastern side of Wuzhizhou Island lies a naturally formed giant rock that resembles a massive sea turtle, with its head and shell clearly discernible. Notably, in front of this rock, a long strip of stone emerges from the sea, which, when the waves wash over it, gives the illusion of the turtle paddling through the water. This dynamic scene makes it appear as if the giant turtle is yearning to return to its homeland, slowly making its way back to the ocean. This enchanting formation is aptly named “Golden Tortoise Exploring the Sea,” capturing the imagination of all who visit.

Seaside Walkway (观海长廊)

Wuzhizhou Island, Sanya 3

On the west side of Wuzhizhou Island, the Seaside Walkway features wooden corridors and platforms built along the coastline. This scenic path allows visitors to admire the crystal-clear waters of the island. The area is rich in rocky formations, providing an ideal habitat for crabs scuttling across the stones. If you’re lucky, you might also spot schools of tropical fish swimming nearby from the platforms, enhancing the natural beauty of your visit. It’s a perfect spot for leisurely strolls and observing the vibrant marine life up close.
