Xiyuan Park in Luoyang (洛阳西苑公园) was established in the late 1950s, initially serving as a nursery. In 1962, it was officially named the Botanical Garden. The main attractions were built and opened to the public in the early 1980s. Later, due to its location on the site of the “Xiyuan” (Western Garden) built by Emperor Yang of Sui in 605 AD, it was renamed Xiyuan Park.
The entrance to Xiyuan Park features a gatehouse with ethnic-style architecture. Welcoming visitors is a large-scale Tang Dynasty tri-colored pottery mural depicting the beautiful scenery of Xiyuan over 1300 years ago. At the heart of the park is an artificial lake spanning 16,000 square meters, with a fluctuating water surface. Within the lake, there are islands adorned with exotic flowers, rare trees, and pavilions, creating a picturesque scene. Various bridges, including curved and flat bridges, connect different parts of the park. Willows grace the lakeside, while cherry blossoms bloom in season. To the west lie rocky mountains and cascading waterfalls, while the east features flatlands adorned with lush flowers and trees. In the south, there’s a peony garden and peony corridor, while the north boasts a rose garden, water pavilions, and platforms. From high vantage points, visitors can take in the panoramic views of the lake, mountains, verdant trees, colorful flowers, and leisurely boats.
The highlight of Xiyuan Park is its botanical exhibition area. Plants are categorized according to the evolutionary system of “phylum, class, order, family, genus,” and are arranged to meet both botanical and landscaping needs. The area is divided into three sections: gymnosperms, angiosperms, and monocots. The park has collected and cultivated over 800 species of garden plants from more than 300 genera and 120 families, including native Chinese species, rare and exotic plants from abroad, making it renowned in the central plains. The park also boasts over 400 bonsai specimens, representing diverse styles from both northern and southern China.
