Yandunjiao Village, Weihai – A Cozy Harbor

Yandunjiao Village Weihai

Yandunjiao (烟墩角), located in Weihai, is a picturesque seaside village with a rich history and vibrant natural beauty. Situated on the eastern coast of China, this small village is home to around 500 households. It is nestled behind a small mountain to the east, forming a cozy harbor that opens into the Yellow Sea. The village derives its name from the beacon tower (“烟墩” in Chinese) built atop Gu Mountain during the Ming Dynasty. This tower was historically used to alert the villagers of Japanese invasions, lighting up as a signal for defense.

Today, Yandunjiao paints a serene picture with its rocky shorelines and the gentle ebb and flow of the sea. Clear streams meander from the hillsides into the bay, providing a continuous supply of fresh water to the ocean. The villagers, known for their kindness and simplicity, reside in traditional thatched cottages that offer natural insulation and comfort throughout the seasons.

One of the unique attractions of Yandunjiao is its role as a winter haven for thousands of wild swans migrating from Siberia every year, typically from November to March. These majestic creatures find refuge in the tranquil waters of the bay, creating a stunning juxtaposition against the coastal scenery. Local initiatives, such as the Yandunjiao Management Station under the Rongcheng National Nature Reserve for Great Swan Protection, ensure the conservation and enhancement of the swans’ natural habitat.

Residents of Yandunjiao actively participate in protecting the swans, forming volunteer patrol teams to safeguard and feed these migratory birds. When villagers or tourists scatter food along the shoreline, the swans gracefully gather, mingling with humans in a harmonious display of nature’s beauty. This interaction has turned Yandunjiao into a favored destination for professional and amateur photographers alike, drawn by the opportunity to capture these elegant creatures against the backdrop of the serene bay.
