Yuhuang Pavilion (玉皇阁, Jade Emperor Pavilion), located in the Xinqing District of Yinchuan, boasts a history of over 600 years, dating back to the Hongwu period of the Ming Dynasty. This traditional wooden structure features multiple tiers and flying eaves, showcasing a compact and exquisite design that reflects the architectural elegance of ancient China. The pavilion is named after the statue of the Jade Emperor (Yuhuang) housed within, symbolizing its spiritual significance.
The pavilion is constructed on a rectangular platform and comprises several components, including the main hall, the west wing hall, and the bell and drum tower, standing at a height of 22 meters. The platform features an arched doorway that runs north to south, and visitors can access the platform via stone steps located on the northwest side. At the center of the platform rises the grand main hall, which reaches 14.1 meters in height and is adorned with a double-eaved hip roof. Flanking the main hall are symmetrical bell and drum towers, each featuring a three-tiered design.
Yuhuang Pavilion is the last remaining ancient wooden high-rise structure in Yinchuan, embodying the exceptional craftsmanship of ancient artisans through its unique architectural style and techniques. The pavilion regularly hosts various small exhibitions showcasing fine arts, calligraphy, and cultural relics. From the top of the pavilion, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the majestic Helan Mountains to the west and the mighty Yellow River to the east, making it a cherished cultural landmark in the region.
