3-Day Yueyang Itinerary: Explore The Anicent City

3 day yueyang itinerary

In the slow flow of time, Yueyang, a historic city with a 2,500-year history, preserves its unique cultural landscapes, well worth our careful appreciation. During the Dragon Boat Festival, you can also experience the International Dragon Boat Festival, where you can join the local residents in commemorating the patriotic poet Qu Yuan.

Day 1: Yueyang Tower – Cishi Pagoda – Yueyang Confucian Temple – Junshan Island

Yueyang Tower stands by Dongting Lake, commanding a magnificent view as it overlooks the Yangtze River. It is considered one of the Three Famous Towers in Jiangnan, alongside the Yellow Crane Tower in Wuhan, Hubei, and the Tengwang Pavilion in Nanchang, Jiangxi. Start your day by climbing Yueyang Tower, reflecting on Qu Yuan’s patriotic sentiment of “Worry before the world worries, rejoice after the world rejoices,” making it a perfect beginning for your trip.

Next, take a walk to Cishi Pagoda, one of the “Baling Scenic Wonders,” which has withstood the test of time and stands proudly after over 800 years of history. Afterwards, visit the Yueyang Confucian Temple to pay respects to Confucius. In the afternoon, head to Junshan Island, which is known as “the painted place” in Li Bai’s poetry, and spend some time exploring the island before wrapping up your day’s journey.

Day 2: Zhang Guxing Village – Bianhe Street

Zhang Guxing Village, located in Zhang Guxing Town of Yueyang County, is the most well-preserved ancient residential architectural cluster in Jiangnan. Although it is a bit far from Yueyang Tower, it’s definitely worth dedicating a full day to explore. Known as “the first village in the world” for its impressive architectural scale, unique style, and beauty, the village has existed for over 500 years and retains more than 1,700 buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties.

In the evening, return to the bustling Bianhe Street (汴河街) and indulge in some authentic Hunan local snacks, enjoying a satisfying end to the day.

Day 3: Miluo Qu Yuan Temple – Du Fu Tomb

Yueyang is situated by the Miluo River, and Miluo City within Yueyang is also a very worth visiting place. The Miluo River flows endlessly, and the Qu Yuan Temple stands majestically by the river. In the morning, take a drive to Qu Yuan Temple, where you can pay tribute to Qu Yuan while enjoying the stunning view of the southern banks of the Yangtze River.

After a visit to the Qu Yuan Temple, have lunch by the Miluo River. Then, head to the Tomb of the Poet Sage Du Fu to pay your respects, rounding off your day with a reflective visit to another literary landmark.
