Baling Square (巴陵广场) is a vibrant public space located by the picturesque Dongting Lake in Yueyang, Hunan Province. This bustling square is situated near the famous Bianhe Street, known for its local delicacies, and the historic Yueyang Tower Park, making it one of the city’s most lively and popular destinations.
Covering an area of approximately 48,400 square meters, Baling Square features a central axis that extends 280.1 meters from east to west. At its heart stands the monumental sculpture “Hou Yi Slays the Snake,” which rises to an impressive height of 16 meters and weighs around 2,000 tons. This striking piece, designed and crafted by the Central Academy of Fine Arts, draws inspiration from local mythology to illustrate the origin of Yueyang’s name, “Baling.” According to ancient legends, the archer Hou Yi defeated a giant snake at Dongting Lake, and the bones of the creature formed the hills of the region, giving rise to the name.
The square can accommodate up to 3,800 people, making it an ideal venue for various gatherings and events. Its design is symmetrical, emphasizing the historical development axis of the city. The square is divided into two levels, gradually descending toward the west with a gentle slope of 1.2%. The lakeside landscape area features a hard landscape zone, primarily composed of steps that lead down to the water. The large steps known as the Baling Grand Steps rise approximately 9 meters and provide a stunning view of Dongting Lake, allowing both residents and visitors to appreciate the beautiful scenery.
The first platform extends toward the lake with a grand and spacious design, enhancing the sense of connection to the water. To the north and south, the square features cultural landscapes that highlight fish culture, along with green belts that line the lakeside. Architectural elements within these areas showcase the fishing industry and lifestyle prevalent in Dongting Lake, enriching the cultural experience of the space.
