Jiaozuo Fenglin Gorge (峰林峡), formerly known as Qunying Lake (群英湖), is a majestic mountainous scenic area that seamlessly blends the unique features of both northern and southern landscapes. Encompassing an area of 50 square kilometers, this natural wonderland boasts a diverse array of breathtaking natural scenery and rich cultural landmarks.
At Fenglin Gorge, visitors are treated to a spectacular panorama of serene rivers and lakes, towering mountains and rugged canyons, sheer cliffs and cavernous caves, as well as a myriad of peculiar rock formations and imposing peaks. Key attractions within the gorge include Xiaogu Mountain, the naturally formed statue of Chairman Mao, the towering dam, Laojun Beach, Hulu Island, Tianwang Rock, Sleeping Beauty, and Santan Yingyue (Three Ponds Reflecting the Moon), each offering its own unique charm and allure.
Legend has it that Xiaogu Mountain was formed when Erlang Shen, a mythical figure in Chinese folklore, was tasked by the Jade Emperor to move mountains and fill the sea, but he encountered discomfort in his feet, leading him to remove his shoes and inadvertently shape the landscape. The natural statue of Chairman Mao, discovered in 1993 during the commemoration of Mao Zedong’s 100th birthday, stands at an impressive height of 12 meters, boasting clear contours and lifelike features, making it a marvel of nature and a cultural treasure. The towering dam of Fenglin Gorge stands majestically amidst the narrow valleys, earning the distinction of being China’s tallest stone arch dam. With its grandeur and graceful lines, the dam’s cascading waterfall resembles flowing silk, creating a mesmerizing spectacle as it crashes against the rocks, shrouded in mist.
Furthermore, Fenglin Gorge serves as a natural botanical garden, with forest coverage reaching an impressive 95% and a negative oxygen ion content of 16800/cm, nearly 500 times higher than that of urban areas. Dubbed as a “natural oxygen bar,” the gorge offers visitors the opportunity to immerse themselves in the pristine beauty of nature, whether hiking along mountain trails or cruising through the canyon, marveling at the unique rock formations and picturesque landscapes that evoke a sense of transcendence.
