Nanchang Travel Guide

Nanchang, often referred to as Hongcheng or the “City of Heroes,” is the capital of Jiangxi Province. It earned its reputation as a heroic city due to the historic “August 1st Nanchang Uprising” and was famously described by the Tang dynasty poet Wang Bo as a place where “nature’s treasures abound and outstanding individuals emerge.” Nanchang is a city rich in history and culture.

Bisected by the Gan River, Nanchang is a green city surrounded by verdant mountains and dotted with lakes, making it a true water city. The city’s development is closely tied to water, and it is often described in the old local saying: “Seven gates, nine prefectures, eighteen slopes, three lakes, and nine ports connecting the Gan and Poyang.” It’s also praised as a “green pearl” along the Beijing-Kowloon railway.

The best time to visit Nanchang is during the spring and autumn seasons. In spring, the city experiences concentrated rainfall, bringing the landscape to life with blooming flowers and lush greenery. In autumn, the skies are clear and the air is crisp, making it the perfect time to visit the nearby Poyang Lake, where thousands of migratory birds gather each year to overwinter, creating a magnificent spectacle.
