Nanchang August 1st Uprising Memorial Hall

The Nanchang August 1st Uprising Memorial Hall (南昌八一起义纪念馆) is a specialized museum established to commemorate the Nanchang Uprising. It was founded in 1956 and officially opened to the public on October 1, 1959. Covering an area of 5,903 square meters, the memorial hall features 509 photographs, diagrams, and 407 sets of cultural relics, as well as 51 pieces of artwork. Its exhibitions primarily focus on the Nanchang Uprising, the glorious history of the People’s Army, and the restoration of the original sites.

Formerly known as the “Jiangxi Grand Hotel,” the site was rented by the uprising forces in late July 1927. In the “Hall of Celebration,” they convened meetings and established the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, with Zhou Enlai as its secretary. On August 1, the Chinese Communist Party launched the Nanchang Uprising, using this location as a command center for subsequent meetings and operations.

The memorial hall’s main exhibition area covers 4,492 square meters with a display route of 998 meters. It is divided into two floors: the first floor serves as the primary exhibition area, while the second floor hosts thematic and multimedia interactive exhibitions. The exhibitions are organized into six parts and 21 display units, including sections such as “Rising in Times of Crisis,” “Great Decisions,” “Firing the First Shot,” “Advancing to Guangdong,” “Repositioning to Jinggangshan,” and “Heroes Shine in China,” presenting the theme of “Great Beginnings” and the thread of “The Road to a Strong Military.” They showcase the glorious journey of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army from its inception during the Nanchang Uprising, illustrating its growth from weakness to strength. Additional exhibits highlight early military explorations by the Communist Party of China and the support of the Jiangxi Provincial Committee and the populace for the uprising.

A historical corridor spanning over 400 meters has been constructed within the exhibition halls, using a plethora of background images to highlight the revolutionary history of the Nanchang Uprising and the stories behind August 1st.
