The Mugecuo Scenic Area is located in the southwestern part of Sichuan Province, China. Specifically, it is situated in Yala County, Kangdi, which is part of the Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. The scenic area lies approximately 280 kilometers east of the popular tourist city of Chengdu, the provincial capital of Sichuan.

The most popular way to get to Mugecuo is to drive yourself, which allows you to enjoy all the wonderful views and attractions on the road. If you do not have a car or do not want to rent one, you can also fly to Kangding (康定) first from Chengdu and then transfer to a coach or a taxi to cover the remaining 50 kilometers.

After entering the Mugecuo Scenic Area, take a sightseeing bus directly to the mountain top, which takes about 30 minutes. The road is winding, so it’s advisable to prepare motion sickness medication. Once you get off the bus, you will be able to enjoy a spectacular performance. Then, continue your exploration along a route that doesn’t double back. You will visit the Mugecuo Viewing Platform (where you can see the White Sea and Black Sea), and the Red Sea Grassland, where boat rides are available based on your preference. You will also explore Red Stone Beach, which is especially beautiful in June and July when the hills are covered in rhododendrons. Additionally, you will see the Medicine Pool Boiling Spring and the Seven-Color Sea before returning to the Visitor Center.

Time Management: Allocate at least half a day for your visit to fully enjoy the scenic area. Note that the last sightseeing car descends from the mountain at 6:00 PM, so plan your activities accordingly.

Preparation: Be well-prepared for varying weather conditions. In particular, bring warm clothing as the temperature difference between the lower and upper parts of the mountain can be significant. Pack rain gear or an umbrella, as weather conditions can change, and it may rain unexpectedly.

Shuttle Bus and Exploration: The shuttle bus will take you to the highest point, and on the return journey, you can choose to disembark at different stops to explore at your own pace. At the highest point, there is a lake and performances with singing and dancing.

Hot Springs Experience: On the way down, there are hot springs where you can soak your feet for a fee (35 yuan). The experience is described as comfortable. Enjoy the unique experience of small fish nibbling at the dead skin on your feet. Additionally, you can try the hot spring eggs (3 yuan).

Café at the Mountain Top: At the mountain’s peak by the lake, there is a café. Relax by the lake, enjoy a cup of coffee, bask in the sun, take photographs, and experience the serene atmosphere.
