Jin’e Hill Park (金鹗山公园), also known as Jin’e Park, is a significant natural and cultural landmark located in Yueyang, Hunan Province, China. Situated to the west of Dongting Lake and to the east of Nanhu Lake, it is a key attraction within the Yueyang Tower and Dongting Lake Scenic Area. Covering an impressive area of 58 hectares, Jin’e Park is recognized as the largest forest park in the urban area of Yueyang.
The park is steeped in local folklore, which tells the story of a celestial being known as the Golden Egret Fairy. According to legend, ancient times saw Dongting Lake plagued by malevolent creatures that terrorized its inhabitants. Outraged by the chaos, the Golden Egret Fairy soared down from the skies to battle these demons, ultimately defeating them. To further enrich the lake, she invited many golden birds from the South China Sea to bring fish fry, which she released into the waters. As a guardian, the Golden Egret Fairy took her place on the shore, ensuring that peace and prosperity would reign in the region. This legend symbolizes the transformation of Dongting Lake into a fertile land, renowned for its abundance of fish and rice, and Jin’e Mountain is considered to embody the spirit of the Golden Egret Fairy.
The mountain itself has a unique shape resembling a giant bird standing majestically. As the highest point in the urban area, with an elevation of 97 meters, it offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city and surrounding landscapes. From the summit, visitors can enjoy sweeping vistas of both Dongting and Nanhu Lakes, as well as the vibrant city of Yueyang.
Jin’e Park also has historical significance. At its base, remnants of ancient structures such as the Kuixing Pavilion and Jin’e Academy can still be found. Notably, during the early Qing Dynasty, the historical figure Wu Sangui used Jin’e Mountain as a stronghold in his fight against the Qing Dynasty, and traces of trenches from that era remain visible. Additionally, the main peak of Jin’e Mountain features a towering television broadcast tower, further enhancing the park’s significance as a recreational and cultural hub.
