Baofeng Lake (宝峰湖), often referred to as a “World Lake Classic,” is a key component of the Zhangjiajie Wulingyuan Scenic Area, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site and Global Geopark, as well as one of China’s first 5A-rated national tourist attractions. Nestled within the distinctive Zhangjiajie landscape, Baofeng Lake seamlessly blends natural mountain and water scenery with the rich cultural heritage of the region, making it a quintessential example of a natural lake scenic area.
The Baofeng Lake Scenic Area comprises two main sections: Baofeng Lake itself and Yingwozhai (Eagle’s Nest Village). Baofeng Lake spans a length of 2.5 kilometers and reaches a depth of 72 meters. The lake is celebrated for its serene beauty, with clear waters reflecting the surrounding peaks and forests. The picturesque landscape is highlighted by the lake’s tranquil waters and the wild, secluded charm of the surrounding caves. Notably, the “Water Curtain Cave” from the TV series Journey to the West was filmed here at the “Wonders of the Flying Waterfall.” The lake is adorned with two verdant islands, and its shores are lined with towering peaks, creating a landscape where mountains and water intertwine in a stunning display.
Yingwozhai, another highlight of the Baofeng Park, offers a different experience. After entering the park and heading westward, visitors ascend several hundred stone steps. The stone peaks above form narrow fissures, leading to an entrance marked by an ancient city gate. At the end of the path lies Baofeng Ancient Temple, a site of flourishing incense offerings. A stone path winds steeply up the cliff to the peak, stretching over 200 meters long and rising more than 100 meters high, with an average width of less than two meters. Legend has it that in the past, a bandit leader, compared to an eagle, once occupied this mountain village. The TV series The Battle of Wulong Mountain was also filmed here.
