Dalian Russian Street (俄罗斯风情街), also known as Tuanjie Street (团结街), is China’s first street featuring 19th- and 20th-century Russian architectural styles. The street preserves 38 original buildings from the era of Far East Belarus, many of which are over a century old. Despite its historical significance, Russian Street is a vibrant area today. Located near the wholesale seafood market and Xingye Building Materials Market to the west, the shipyard and Dalian Port to the north and east, and just a kilometer from Zhongshan Square to the south, it is well-connected to Dalian’s urban landscape.
The area has a rich history dating back to 1898, when the Russian Empire signed the “Lüda Lease Agreement” with the Qing government. By 1899, the Russians had begun constructing a city and port along the southern coast of Dalian Bay, calling it “Dalini” (meaning “faraway” in Russian). They designated different zones for administrative, European, and Chinese areas and built the city’s first train station at Qingniwa Bridge.
Russian Street was once part of the administrative district in the city’s early Russian layout. The main road, known as “Engineer Street,” became Dalian’s first urban street, with its two ends marked by Administrative Square in the north and Municipal Square in the south. These squares hosted important events, parades, markets, and transportation hubs. The City Hall, built in a neoclassical style, was the focal point of Administrative Square, while the most notable building on Municipal Square was the residence of the president of the China Eastern Railway Company, which is now the Dalian Art Museum.
In 1905, following the Russo-Japanese War, Japan occupied Dalian and renamed Engineer Street to “Russia Town,” later changing it to “Kodama Town” in 1907. During the Japanese occupation, many Russian-style structures were replaced or modified, though the area retained its European charm. After World War II, Kodama Town was renamed Tuanjie Street, and in 1999, to celebrate Dalian’s 100th anniversary, the street was redeveloped into a popular tourist destination, showcasing Russian architectural and cultural heritage.
