Established in 1924, Beishan Park (北山公园, Northern Hill Park) is located in the heart of Jilin City and is renowned for its temple gardens and scenic landscapes. The park features its main peak, which rises to an elevation of 270 meters, and is surrounded by three picturesque lakes. The site is also home to a collection of ancient temples built during the Qing Dynasty, where Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism coexist harmoniously, offering a unique cultural experience.
One of the park’s most striking features is the Wobo Bridge, which elegantly divides the lake into eastern and western sections. In the summer, the lake is adorned with blooming lotus flowers, filling the air with their fragrant scent as a gentle breeze blows across the water.
The park’s historic architecture includes several notable temples located on the eastern peak, such as Yuhuang Pavilion, Yaowang Temple, Kanli Palace, and Guandi Temple. Among these, Guandi Temple is the oldest, having been established during the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty. The main hall features a statue of Guan Yu, flanked by statues of his companions, Guan Ping and Zhou Cang. Above the hall hangs a plaque inscribed with the words “灵著幽岐 Ling Zhu You Qi,” written by Emperor Qianlong. Adjacent to the main hall is a stage for performances, complemented by other structures including the Bell Tower, Drum Tower, Zhuhe Pavilion, Songfeng Hall, Chengjiang Pavilion, and Zanliu Pavilion.
For centuries, Beishan has been a popular destination for visitors seeking spring outings, summer retreats, lotus flower viewing, and winter snow appreciation. It is also a revered site for pilgrims, attracting numerous worshippers who come to pray and make offerings at the temples. Visitors can enjoy activities such as paddling boats on the lake, relaxing in pavilions with tea, and paying respects at the ancestral halls and Yaowang Temple.
Two significant temple fairs occur each year: the Niangniang Temple Fair on the 18th day of the fourth lunar month and the Yaowang Temple Fair on the 28th day of the same month. These events draw crowds of tourists and devotees alike, featuring lively performances including acrobatics, dance, and folk songs, as well as a variety of local snacks. Beishan Park has long been celebrated in northeastern China, with a saying dating back to the Qing Dynasty: “Qianshan Temple Fair surpasses all in the Northeast; Jilin Temple Fair surpasses all in Qianshan.”
