Bigu Heavenly Lake (碧沽天池), known as “Chuzhang” in Tibetan, meaning “small lake,” is nestled at an altitude of 3,500 meters in the Bigu Pasture. Covering an area of approximately 0.21 square kilometers, with an average depth of only 1.62 meters and a maximum depth of about 3 meters, the lake may be small and shallow, yet it exudes a peculiar tranquility and clarity.
Surrounded by vast expanses of pristine forests, lush meadows, and tranquil herds of cattle and sheep, the most enchanting sight is the azaleas by the lakeside. The peak season for azaleas, typically from May to August, is when Bigu Heavenly Lake is at its most beautiful. The azaleas here form thickets, predominantly featuring yellow, white, and red azaleas with large and vibrant flowers. During the flowering season, the lakeside transforms into a beautiful floral paradise, with a myriad of blossoms showcasing a kaleidoscope of colors. The various hues – elegant white, dignified yellow, and vibrant red – blend together in a silent chorus of nature. Additionally, on the slopes not far from the lake, there is nearly a hundred acres of cherry blossom azaleas, adding to the picturesque landscape.
Apart from its stunning azaleas, Bigu Heavenly Lake boasts rich ecological resources, including alpine plants, ancient trees, and wildlife. Furthermore, the lake offers a variety of recreational activities, such as rock climbing, skiing, and off-road vehicles, catering to the needs of visitors of all ages. With abundant hot spring resources at around 35°C, Bigu Heavenly Lake serves as an ideal retreat for soothing both body and mind. From mid-October to mid-November, visitors can witness the breathtaking beauty of the lake adorned with crimson foliage, creating a scene of unparalleled natural splendor.
Whether you seek to immerse yourself in the tranquility of nature, indulge in thrilling adventures, or simply unwind in the rejuvenating embrace of hot springs, Bigu Heavenly Lake offers an unforgettable experience for all who venture into its tranquil embrace.
