Chuiyun Tongtian River – Ticket, Opening Hours, Location, and Highlights

chuiyun tongtian river

Chuiyun Tongtian River (垂云通天河), or Hanging Clouds Reaching the Sky River, is an underground karst river characterized by its subterranean passages. The geological formation of the area, shaped by crustal movements and volcanic eruptions millions of years ago, has given rise to typical karst topography within the scenic region. With a total length of 4.5 kilometers and a drop of 380 meters in elevation, it covers an area of over 80,000 square meters.

At the origin of Chuiyun Tongtian River lies a forest-covered area spanning nearly 30 square kilometers. Surface water from the extensive forest converges into a funnel-shaped cavity known as Litian Tongli, resembling an immense natural sinkhole. Flowing down the winding and twisting natural riverbed, this water source forms the vast underground river within Chuiyun Cave, hence the name Tongtian River, meaning “River Reaching the Sky.” The combination of subterranean passages, lush forest cover, and dramatic geological features makes Chuiyun Tongtian River a captivating destination for visitors seeking to explore the wonders of karst landscapes.
