The former site of Dade School in Guiyang (贵阳达德学校旧址) holds a rich history, tracing its origins back to the Yuan Dynasty when it was known as the Nan Jiyun Temple, dedicated to commemorating Nan Jiyun and his descendants. Nan Jiyun, a notable figure who served as the Clear River Prefect in Guizhou, inspired the construction of the temple. Over the Ming and Qing dynasties, the temple underwent multiple renovations and expansions, eventually transforming into the Zhonglie Palace.

In a later chapter of its history, the site gave birth to Dade Academy, which played a significant role in the intellectual landscape of Guiyang. It served as the location for the first scientific research institution in Guizhou, known as the Mathematics Institute, making it a pioneer in the study of natural sciences in the region. Moreover, Dade Academy holds the distinction of being the first to establish a comprehensive private elementary school in Guizhou, marking its place as a trailblazer in the educational landscape.

Location and Transportation

The former site of Dade School in Guiyang is situated adjacent to the Baihua Square in the heart of Guiyang City, Guizhou Province. Its precise address is 18 Zhonghua South Road, Nanming District.

To get there, tourists can take bus 1, 22, 40, 69, or 86, and get off at Dade Xuexiao Jiuzhi Stop (达德学校旧址站, The Former Site of Dade School Stop).

Guiyang Dade School emerged during the late Qing Dynasty, a period marked by the influence of Western ideas and the rise of Western education. The school operated for a span of 46 years, leaving behind a legacy that is deeply embedded in the cultural and educational history of the region. The architecture of the former site exudes an ancient charm, with its main structure comprised of two quadrangles.

The first quadrangle, situated in the front courtyard, features a grand hall adorned with a plaque bearing the inscription “Dade Theater,” a left wing with the plaque “Dade Academy,” a right wing with the plaque “Ice Jar Residence,” and an imposing entrance gate. The second quadrangle, located in the rear courtyard, houses a hall with plaques displaying the principles of “Good Learning,” “Diligence,” and “Shame Awareness.” Within this space, the school’s history is exhibited, recounting its significant contributions.

In front of the hall, on a raised platform, stand statues of Wang Ruofei and Huang Qisheng, and to the right, a memorial stone inscribed with “Do Not Forget May 7th.” On the left side of the hall stands a one-story building exhibiting the works of Xie Xiaosi and Liu Shuhua. On the right side, there is a hall commemorating Mr. Huang Ganfu. Directly facing the hall to the west is a two-story building, with the upper floor serving as the office of the Municipal Cultural Management Office and the lower floor hosting frequent art exhibitions. The central courtyard is adorned with a fish pond and a garden, adding to the overall serenity of the historic site. The former site of Dade School stands as a testament to the cultural and educational milestones achieved in Guiyang, reflecting the evolution of knowledge and learning in the region.
