Hebao Island, Zhuhai – A Primitive Retreat

Hebao Island, Zhuhai

Hebao Island (荷包岛, Purse Island, Wallet Island) is located at the southwestern tip of Zhuhai City in Guangdong Province, covering an area of approximately 13 square kilometers with a coastline stretching about 28 kilometers. The island boasts crystal-clear waters and features eight beautiful bays, including Danan Bay, Zangbao Bay (also known as Gem Beach), and Longtung Bay.

Danan Bay is particularly renowned for its stunning sandy beach, which spans about 4 kilometers in length and extends 200 to 500 meters in depth. With its soft and evenly textured sand, this beach is often referred to as the “Ten-Mile Silver Beach,” making it an exceptional natural seaside swimming area. Visitors can enjoy a variety of recreational activities on the island, such as scenic island tours, camping with tents, and bonfire parties. However, due to limited development, the facilities are relatively primitive, so it is advisable to bring snacks and supplies before heading to the island. Tents and small wooden cabins can be rented for camping by the seaside.

One of the most entertaining activities on Hebao Island is crab catching at night. The beach becomes quite dark, and the sound of waves crashing creates a serene atmosphere. Armed with a flashlight and a small bucket, visitors can chase after the tiny sand crabs that scurry away in a frenzy when illuminated, making for a delightful and somewhat chaotic experience.

Additionally, Hebao Island offers a thrilling jungle adventure. The island’s rugged terrain, where mountains meet the sea, is home to 400 hectares of secondary natural forest. Historically, Hebao Island served as a military stronghold during wartime, and numerous remnants of old military facilities can still be found, including watchtowers, bunkers, and air-raid shelters. These historical relics, which document the events of the Japanese invasion of China and the heroic deeds of the navy stationed on the island, add a layer of mystery and intrigue to the island’s tourism appeal. Visitors can also find a wind turbine donated by the International Red Cross, further enriching the island’s historical narrative.
