Jinzhanghan (Golden Tent) Mongolian Tribe on Hulunbuir Grassland

Jinzhanghan Golden Tent Mongolian Tribe On Hulunbuir Grassland

The Jinzhanghan Mongolian Tribe (Golden Tent Mongolian Tribe, 金帐汗蒙古部落) is a unique tourist destination located on the banks of the winding Mergel River, which is known as “China’s First Bend” on the vast Hulunbuir Grasslands. As the only scenic spot in the Hulunbuir region that showcases a traditional nomadic tribe, it offers visitors a rare opportunity to experience Mongolian culture in its natural environment. This area has long been famous as a natural pasture, and it has served as the homeland for many nomadic tribes throughout Chinese history. From the end of the 12th century to the beginning of the 13th century, Genghis Khan, one of the greatest conquerors in history, trained his army and engaged in tribal warfare here, ultimately dominating the Hulunbuir Grasslands. The layout of the Jinzhanghan scenic area replicates the encampment of Genghis Khan’s army, providing a glimpse into the past and the life of the Mongol empire.

In 1202, Temujin, who would later be known as Genghis Khan, launched a campaign against his adoptive father, Wang Khan, and his sworn brother, Jamukha, who represented the conservative Mongolian aristocracy. Leading his forces, Temujin launched a surprise attack from the western foothills of the Xing’an Mountains, catching his enemies off guard. After initially retreating to Mount Huitun, Temujin’s army launched a devastating counterattack, showering the pursuing enemy with arrows and charging down the mountain like a fierce storm. This victory solidified Temujin’s position as Khan and led to his conquest of eastern Mongolia. To celebrate this triumph, Temujin set up his grand tent, known as the “Golden Tent,” in the picturesque Mergel River Valley, near the majestic Huhwendur Mountains. This marked the beginning of his rise to power and the eventual unification of the Mongolian Plateau.

Today, the Jinzhanghan Mongolian Tribe continues to evoke the spirit of the Mongol Empire. Every summer, Mongolian and Evenk herders from the Chen Barag Banner gather in this lush and fertile region, naturally forming a nomadic community. Under the vast blue sky, the landscape is dotted with winding rivers, green grasslands, herds of cattle and sheep, and traditional yurts. Smoke from cooking fires rises into the air, creating a serene and idyllic atmosphere that makes this area one of the world’s rarest sanctuaries for nomadic culture.

Visitors to the Jinzhanghan Mongolian Tribe can experience a wide range of cultural activities. These include bonfire parties, thrilling horse-riding and taming shows, Mongolian wrestling competitions, and rituals such as the Oboo worship ceremony. Shamanic religious performances offer a glimpse into ancient Mongolian spiritual practices, while the rich food culture provides a taste of traditional Mongolian cuisine. These experiences give every visitor a chance to reconnect with nature and immerse themselves in the heritage of the Mongolian people.
