Kangle Grassland, Zhangye – Home to the Famous Kanglong Temple

Kangle Grassland

Kangle Grassland (康乐草原), named after the “Kanglong Temple (康隆寺)” within its boundaries, spans a total area of 2.68 million acres, with approximately 450,000 acres of forest. The area boasts a variety of tourist attractions, including the Danxia Geological Scenic Area, Machangtian Grassland, Kanglong Temple, Snow Mountain Adventure Tourism Zone, and the Shiwowei Historic Site. Known for its picturesque scenery, pleasant climate, and convenient transportation and communication, Kangle Grassland has become a well-equipped destination for vacationing, entertainment, sightseeing, and experiencing ethnic customs.

One of the most renowned spots in Machangtian Grassland is the “Nine Rows of Pines,” named for the orderly arrangement of pine trees. This area features majestic mountains, towering forests, lush vegetation, and fresh, cool air filled with the songs of birds. In spring and summer, the landscape is dominated by a vast expanse of green grasslands and blooming flowers. In autumn, wild fruits abound, and the red leaves create a stunning contrast. Winter transforms the grassland into a snowy wonderland, offering breathtakingly beautiful scenes.

Every July, the grassland hosts a grand festival where locals, dressed in festive attire, gather to participate in various traditional activities. These include horse racing, wrestling, archery, tug-of-war, cultural performances, and ritual offerings to Oboo (sacred stone heaps). These vibrant events showcase the rich cultural heritage of the region and leave visitors with unforgettable memories.

Kanglong Temple, located in Dacaotan Village of Hongshiwo Township, was originally built during the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty and has a history of over 300 years. The temple holds significant religious events on the 14th day of the first lunar month, the 4th day of the sixth lunar month, and the 25th day of the tenth lunar month, with smaller gatherings on the 15th day of each month. The temple is situated in a scenic area with rugged terrain, lush vegetation, and vibrant wildflowers. Across the river from the temple, verdant pines and cypresses form a natural, picturesque screen, while the clear river below winds its way through the landscape, adding to the area’s serene and idyllic charm.

As you explore Kangle Grassland, you will encounter the imposing Qing Stone Mountain in the eastern part of the grassland, known as the Shiwo Mountains. This area is historically significant as it was a battleground for the Western Route Army of the Red Army. The Shiwo Site is a revolutionary landmark where the Western Route Army’s Military and Political Committee meetings were held. At the top of Hongshiwo Mountain, a memorial monument commemorates this historic site, making it a revered destination for red tourism.
