Miaowan Island, Zhuhai – A Peaceful Retreat

Miaowan Island

Miaowan Island (庙湾岛), located southeast of Zhuhai, is a small yet picturesque destination renowned for its unique wind-eroded coastal landscape and abundant marine life. The island is surrounded by scattered reefs, making it an ideal breeding ground for various marine species. It is particularly famous as a top fishing spot in Southeast Asia, earning the nicknames “Dream Island” and “China’s Maldives.” The island’s rich ocean resources and beautiful environment make it a favorite among fishing enthusiasts and nature lovers.

One of the island’s main attractions is Xiafeng Bay, a stunning coral beach with fine, white sand and crystal-clear blue waters. The seabed here features rare red coral formations, making it an ideal location for snorkeling and diving. Visitors can explore the vibrant underwater world or simply relax on the pristine shores, enjoying the tranquility and beauty of the surroundings.

The name Miaowan originates from “Zhu Bay” and the “Temple” (Miao) of Beidi that once stood on the island. Although the temple is now in ruins, visitors can still see traces of its existence, including a stone plaque with the faint inscription “Beidi Palace.” The island’s small population lives a simple life, primarily relying on fishing for their livelihood, which adds to the rustic charm of the area.

Miaowan Island is quite small, consisting of a pier, a tiny village, and a small beach. The rest of the island is made up of rocky hills with no major tourist attractions, making it a perfect destination for those seeking a peaceful retreat by the sea. On clear, sunny days, the waters around the island are ideal for snorkeling and exploring the nearby reefs, where crabs and sea urchins can often be found. However, visitors should be cautious when walking on the sharp rocks or wear water shoes to avoid injury.
