Mukeng Bamboo Forest (木坑竹海, Mukeng Bamboo Forest) is located in Huangshan City, Anhui Province. This scenic area is known for its vast expanses of lush bamboo forests, creating a serene and tranquil atmosphere, ideal for those seeking a peaceful retreat. Due to its relative seclusion, the forest remains quiet, with fewer visitors, allowing one to fully immerse in the natural beauty. On days with favorable weather, visitors may even witness a sea of clouds similar to those seen at the nearby Huangshan Mountains.
Mukeng Bamboo Forest, also known as “Dripping Green Valley,” is famous for its dense bamboo coverage, spanning about 6 kilometers in depth. The valley is surrounded by bamboo on all sides, forming a natural basin that is said to have excellent feng shui, symbolizing wealth and prosperity. After the rain, the sight of white clouds lingering over the bamboo forests is truly enchanting, and on clear days, the sunrise view over the green waves of bamboo resembles the stunning cloud seas of Huangshan. At night, the moonlight adds a mystical touch to the valley, creating an ethereal atmosphere.
The main tourist route through Mukeng Bamboo Forest forms a circular path, with three key sections: Xihai (West Sea, near the gate from the direction of Hongcun), Mukeng Village, and Nanhai (South Sea, near the gate from the direction of Huangshan). Most visitors start at Xihai, climb to a viewing platform to admire the bamboo forest and Mukeng Village, then descend through the village towards Nanhai. In Nanhai, there is a mysterious valley known as Nanhai Valley, where “Bamboo Monster City” is located. Here, visitors can find whimsical bamboo creations that surprise and amuse them.
At the end of the trail, you can see Xiunü Lake, where the bamboo forest reflects beautifully in the emerald-green water, creating a picturesque scene. Mukeng Bamboo Forest gained international fame as a filming location for the 2001 Oscar-winning movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, where the famous bamboo forest fight scene was filmed. Many tourists mistakenly believe that this scene was shot in Emerald Valley, but it was actually filmed in Mukeng Bamboo Forest, while the leap into the pool was filmed at the colorful pools of Emerald Valley.
