Heilongjiang Provincial Museum (黑龙江省博物馆), established in 1906, is housed in a historic European Baroque-style building that once served as a Russian shopping mall. Located in Harbin, the capital of Heilongjiang Province, this museum covers a total area of over 7,000 square meters, with 3,000 square meters dedicated to exhibitions, including both permanent and temporary displays. It holds an impressive collection of over 630,000 items, ranging across four main categories: history, natural history, art, and literature. Among its extensive collection, there are 1,670 first-class national treasures comprising 12,753 items, as well as numerous second- and third-class relics.
The museum is divided into several exhibit areas. The first floor is home to an exhibition dedicated to the renowned Chinese calligrapher and seal engraver, Mr. Deng Sanmu, showcasing his artistic works. On the second floor, visitors will find the natural history and historical exhibits. The natural history section features fascinating displays such as dinosaur fossils, mammoth remains, and taxidermied specimens of northern wildlife, including the Siberian tiger. The historical section takes visitors on a journey through time, from the Paleolithic era to the Qing Dynasty, presenting a wealth of artifacts that highlight the rich cultural heritage of the region.
The basement level houses a temporary exhibition hall, where rotating exhibits are frequently held. These exhibitions often feature local artifacts from various cities and counties across Heilongjiang Province, promotional displays for regional tourism, and sometimes even displays of famous calligraphy, painting, and handicrafts. This ever-changing space ensures that visitors always have something new to discover.
One of the museum’s most notable permanent exhibitions is Harbin Stories: Social Life in the Early 20th Century. In the early 20th century, Harbin became a crucial gateway for the introduction of Western culture into China, while also serving as a vital hub for the transmission of Chinese traditional culture to the West. This exhibition is designed around the timeline of Harbin’s urban development during the 1920s and 1930s and is divided into three sections: Immigrant Settlement: The Lives of the Chinese People, Building the Railway: The Rise of Industry and Science, and International Metropolis: The Fusion of Multiculturalism. With 1,382 precious artifacts bearing local, immigrant, and fusion cultural imprints, the exhibition provides a vivid portrayal of Harbin’s dynamic history during this transformative period.

Metro: The cloeset metro station to the attraction is the Museum (博物馆) on line 1 and line 2. After getting out of the station from Exit 1, walk across the street to reach the museum.
