Qi’ao Island, Zhuhai – The GAteway to the Cross-Sea Bridge

Qi'ao Island Zhuhai

Qi’ao Island (淇澳岛), located in Zhuhai City, Guangdong Province, China, boasts a lush forest cover of 90% and features 18 peaks exceeding 100 meters, with the highest being Wangchiling in the northeast. Connected to the mainland by the Qi’ao Bridge, the island serves as a gateway to Lingdingyang and the cross-sea bridge. Rich in history, Qi’ao Island is home to landmarks like the former residence of Su Zhaozheng, the ancient site of Shawan, and Baishi Street, alongside natural attractions such as the mangrove wetland reserve and Qi’ao Bay.

Exploring the entire island on foot takes about six hours due to the dispersed nature of the attractions, so renting a bicycle – available for around 10 yuan per day – is highly recommended for convenience. Baishi Street, said to have been built with silver compensation after local residents successfully resisted British invasion in 1833, adds a historical touch.

The mangrove wetland, located in the northern part of the island, is a key attraction where visitors can observe diverse fish species and large crabs, with over 100,000 migratory birds visiting in winter. The island’s greenways, especially the wooden paths through the wetlands, offer a scenic biking experience under shady canopies, making Qi’ao Island a delightful destination for nature lovers and adventurers.
