Qiao Street in Liping County

Qiao Street (翘街), also known as Dongmen Street (东门街), is a historical and cultural street with well-preserved Ming and Qing architectural complexes in Liping County. It stands as a testament to the historical significance of the Long March in the region. The street stretches from the east gate of the city wall to the Lotus Pond at Erlangpo in the south, covering a length of nearly 1 km. Its unique topography, with elevated ends and a lower middle section, resembles a raised wooden shoulder pole, earning it the name “Qiao Street.”

Liping Ancient City was historically divided into eight districts and thirteen lanes. The Qiao Street area consists of the former East Corner Lane, Qingyuan Lane, Houjie Lane, and others. The city’s streets and lanes crisscross, paved with stone slabs, and adorned with clear and refreshing wells and ponds. Courtyards, each with its unique elegance, feature intricately designed eaves, creating a picturesque scene of prosperity. Temples, pavilions, archways, and shops line the streets, portraying a flourishing cultural and commercial landscape. In 2011, Qiao Street was recognized as a Historical and Cultural Famous Street in China.

On December 18, 1934, during the arduous 25,000-mile Long March of the Central Red Army, a significant event took place in one of the shops on Qiao Street. The “Liping Conference of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China” was held, attended by leaders such as Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, and Zhu De. Today, the “Liping Conference Site Memorial Hall” has become a prominent destination for “Red Tourism.” In addition to the Liping Conference site, Qiao Street boasts other historical relics, including residences of Mao Zedong and Chen Yun, the former site of the Central Red Army’s rest camp, the site of the Central Red Army’s instructional team, the “Lianghu” Club, the Gospel Church, and the Red Army Square. These sites collectively contribute to the rich historical tapestry of Qiao Street, offering visitors a glimpse into the region’s revolutionary past.
