Shapotou Scenic Area – A Blend of Yellow River and Desert

Shapotou Scenic Area

Shapotou Scenic Area (沙坡头景区), located in Zhongwei City, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, is one of China’s key areas for desert control, stretching about 38 kilometers long and 5 kilometers wide, with an elevation between 1,300 and 1,500 meters. Covering 4,599.3 hectares, it uniquely blends the vast desert, the Yellow River, towering mountains, and lush oases, offering both the grandeur of the northwest’s landscapes and the delicate beauty typical of southern China. The area also features historical relics, including sections of the Warring States-era Qin Great Wall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

One of Shapotou’s most striking features is its distinctive S-shaped geographical formation, resembling the ancient Chinese yin-yang symbol. This natural wonder was once highlighted by the prestigious National Geographic magazine as a global marvel.

Visitors to Shapotou can enjoy a range of thrilling experiences. It boasts China’s largest natural sand-skiing site, offering an exhilarating ride down the dunes. Spanning the Yellow River is the “First Ropeway of the Yellow River,” providing scenic views of the water. Visitors can also see ancient waterwheels, a key element of Yellow River culture, and ride the oldest traditional river transport—the sheepskin raft. The rare phenomenon of a mirage can sometimes be witnessed in the desert, adding a magical element to the area.

Adventure seekers can ride camels through the Tengger Desert or take a 4×4 for an exciting desert off-road experience, while marveling at breathtaking scenes like “desert smoke rising” and the sunset over the long river.

Shapotou offers not only diverse cultural elements and fun activities but also a variety of accommodation options. Visitors can choose from luxurious options like the Diamond Hotel with butler service, the tranquil Star Hotel for stargazing, the Yellow River Courtyard for a peaceful retreat, or the more budget-friendly Business Visitor Service Center Hotel. This mix of unique natural wonders, adventure, and comfort makes Shapotou a captivating destination for travelers.
